Ahmedabad, India Meeting Planning Overview

The largest city in the western state of Gujarat, Ahmedabad is both a hub for tourism (its numerous majestic monuments date back to the 11th century) and for higher education, information technology space and commerce. In fact, Ahmedabad earned the nickname of "the Manchester of the East" for its longstanding commercial textile production. Among Ahmedabad event venues, the Calico museum is a mecca for textiles and is an important must-see for meetings associated with that industry.

Easily accessible and served by major domestic airlines, Ahmedabad's recently upgraded airport, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, is India's eighth busiest; it is also within easy access to the Gujarat's capital, Gandhinagar.

Chief among convention venues, Ahmedabad Exhibition Centre has several flexible conference rooms and seminar halls ideal for large corporate meetings, exhibitions and promotional events; as well as smaller programs. Hotel venues in Ahmedabad include the 63-room Le Meridien, which has three meeting rooms; and the 164-room Courtyard Marriott has two convention rooms with 4,542 square feet of total meeting space, with the capacity for 600.

Home to an elite management school, Ahmedabad is a city of paradoxes. For example, the chaos of its lively markets contrasts with the serenity of the Gandhi Ashram on the banks of the Sabarmati river. Post tours can offer numerous options. Just 76 kilometers away by road are the ruins of the ancient city of Lothal, believed to be the cradle of the subcontinent's oldest civilization. Another travel itinerary is Nalsarovar bird sanctuary, which is a 64-kilometer drive from Ahmedabad. Over 200 types of birds visit Nalsarovar every year from November to February.

In the works, the upcoming Gujarat International Finance Tec City (GIFT), will be able to accommodate meetings of up to 1,000, providing a spill-over effect for Ahmedabad as a meetings hub. Major hotel chains, including the Taj Group, Oberoi Group, Hyatt and Leela, have expressed an interest in setting up properties here.
