Albany, GA Meeting Planning Overview

The birthplace of singer Ray Charles, Albany, in the southwest of Georgia, has a long-standing African-American legacy. The Albany Civil Rights Institute and the Albany Museum of Art (which has one of the U.S.' best collections of African and African-American art), are just two of many signature Albany event venues.

Despite a relatively small population, Albany has its own commercial airport, Southwest Georgia Regional Airport (ABY), which is three miles southwest of the city center. Delta Connection shuttles passengers to and from Atlanta, 146 miles to the north.

Chief among the city's convention venues, Albany Civic Center has the largest indoor exhibition space in the area. The center has eight meeting rooms, 46,000 square feet of exhibition space and a 10,240-seat theater; and it can accommodate receptions of up to 2,500 persons.

Hotel venues in Albany include the 93-room Hampton Inn & Suites, which has 840 square feet of meeting space; the 122-room Hilton Garden Inn, which has 13,000 square feet of meeting space; the 110-room Merry Acres Inn, which contains the 5,900-square-foot Event & Conference Center; the 86-room Wingate by Wyndham, which has reception space for up to 75 persons; and the 61-room Best Western Albany Mall Inn & Suites, which has 700 square feet of exhibit space.

One of the two aforementioned museums, the Albany Museum of Art can host unique events, as it contains 1,800 square feet of exhibit space and is able to host banquets of 136 persons and receptions of up to 300. Other venue spaces include the Albany Area Arts Council at the Carnegie Library, which also has 1,800 square feet of exhibit space; Thronateeska Heritage Center, named for the Creek Native American word for the stone flint and containing history and science museums, planetarium and 1,350 square feet of exhibit space; Flint RiverQuarium, which has 100 native marine species, the Imagination Theater for seminars and 3D movies and 4,000 square feet of exhibit space; and Stonebridge Golf & Country Club, which can host receptions of up to 450 persons.

Barbecue and steak are the big culinary stars in town. Restaurants that host groups include Carter's Grill & Restaurant, an informal, soul-food spot that can cater to up to 250 persons; Blackbeard's B&B Bar-B-Que, which has separate barbecue and seafood menus and space for up to 60 persons; Our Daily Bread, which is a unique farm-to-fork option serving dishes featuring grass-fed beef and organically grown vegetables; RiverFront Bar-B-Q, which can host up to 100 persons, and Henry Campbell's Steakhouse, which is only open for dinner, is widely regarded for its steaks and can host up to 60 persons.
