Twenty miles northwest of downtown Detroit, Birmingham has a population of approximately 20,000, which is large enough to have its own symphony orchestra. Birmingham event venues enjoy synergy with Rochester Hills and Troy, as well as other suburbs within the metro Detroit area.
The airport serving Birmingham, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), has service to all over Canada and the U.S., as well as several major transportation hubs in Europe, including Amsterdam, London, and Paris.
While there is no stand-alone meetings venue in Birmingham, immediately to the south in Troy is the Management Education Center, which has five meeting rooms, a 110-seat amphitheater, a 400-seat auditorium and a 312-seat dining room, among other spaces, while those seeking much larger space need to go to Detroit's Cobo Center, which has 100 meeting rooms, 2.4 million square feet of event space, eight exhibition halls and theater, banqueting and reception space all for up to 4,350 persons.
Hotel venues in Birmingham include 150-room Townsend Hotel, which has 14 possible configurations for events, including a ballroom for 500 persons, and 64-room Holiday Inn Express Detroit Birmingham, which has one meeting room for up to 12 persons. In neighboring Troy are the 345-room Detroit Marriott Troy, which has 17,000 square feet of function space, the largest area having room for up to 1,000 persons; 251-room Embassy Suites Detroit Troy Auburn Hills, which has 5,000 square feet of meeting space and 1,500-square-foot terrace, while in Auburn Hills, a neighborhood one neighborhood farther to the north, is the 224-room Hilton Auburn Hills Suites, with seven function areas, the largest able to host up to 120 persons.
Unique gathering space close to Birmingham include The Community House, a not-for-profit education and community center that is within a three-part, grand, 1920s building and has 10,000 square feet of refined meeting, seminar, reception, and banquet space for up to 1,000 persons; and The Reserve, a Napa Valley-style venue for weddings and corporate events that includes banquet space for up to 300 persons. In adjacent cities are the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm, which covers 16 acres, dates to 1823 and includes the 1927 Dairy Barn with conference room and exhibit space for up to 75 persons and the Calf Barn for 160; Oakland University, which has a golf and learning center that contains two championship golf courses, R&S Sharf Golf Course and Katke-Cousins Golf Course, which also come with an attractive, white, stand-alone clubhouse with a restaurant and a conference room; and The Palace of Auburn Hills, in Auburn Hills, which is home to the National Basketball Association's Detroit Pistons and has six separate clubs for events, including Club 300 for 330 persons, Pistons VIP Club for 475 and Courtside Club for 50.
Restaurants in Birmingham include The Big Rock Chophouse, specializing in meats and seafood, in the same site and under the same ownership as The Reserve and with private dining space for up to 400 persons; Mitchell's Fish Market, which specializes in seafood, too, has a martini bar and includes the Captain's Quarters for private dining of up to 18 persons; The Forest Grill, for fine dining and with a good wine cellar; 220 Restaurant, with more fine dining, a champagne bar and two, adjoined private rooms for seated dinners of up to 42 persons and reception for up to 60, and Social Kitchen & Bar, which has yet more Birmingham fine dining and a roof area, loft, window conservatory and covered outdoor area for private dining.
