Chiang Mai Meeting Planning Overview
The gateway to Thailand's northern hilly terrain is picturesque Chiang Mai, called "Rose of the North." Chiang Mai event venues are able to host large groups, but what is special about this area is that its mist-covered mountains, valleys, geysers and thick forests are home to half a million people living in indigenous tribes that have retained their culture. Daily trips to native villages is a popular group option.
The best way to get to Chiang Mai is through Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX), which also gets domestic flights. CNX is just 4 kilometers away from the city center. A one-way flight from Bangkok takes about one hour. There are also international flights to and from some major Asian destinations including Singapore, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur.
Newest among convention venues, the $62 million Chiang Mai International Convention and Exhibition Center has over 74,000 square feet of meeting space and includes a plenary hall with 3,000 capacity, 32 meeting rooms and exhibition space for 476 booths.
Hotel venues in Chiang Mai include the 375-room Empress Chiang Mai Hotel, which has a three-story convention center, with meeting rooms that can be configured for 50 participants to 1,500, according to the type, size and requirements of each event. Function rooms within the hotel can accommodate up to 500 guests, and an outdoor exhibition area is also available. The 200-room Chiangmai Grandview Hotel & Convention Center is another new facility at Chiang Mai for up to 2,000. The 420-room Lotus Pang Suan Kaew Hotel, Chiang Mai accommodates up to 3,250 and the 512-room Centara Duangtawan Hotel, 2,200.
Chiang Mai is known for its centuries-old wats (Buddhist temples), many of which are in the city area. As Chiang Mai is easy to get around, touring around town to visit these temples by bicycle is popular. A night city tour could include the night market, where vendors include hill tribes selling their handicrafts (the style is typified in the chunky handcrafted jewelry and woolen rugs). There are also many adventure options for incentive tours including rock climbing, bungee jumping and mountain biking. Trekking enthusiasts will find many trails in the mountains surrounding the city. Golf is always popular.
