Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore

Historical landmark
2 minutes away
During your stay in Florence, we recommend a visit to the famous Brunelleschi's dome at the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore in Piazza Duomo. Brunelleschi's masterpiece covers the transept of Florence Cathedral, and it is the largest masonry dome ever built. In fact, the longest diagonal stretch of the inner dome measures 45.5 meters, while the outside is 54 m.. Its weight is estimated at 37,000 tons and it is thought that over four million bricks were used for its construction. The lower part of Brunelleschi's cupola has frescoes painted by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari between 1572 and 1579. It is the biggest fresco in the world (3600 sqm) and it depicts scenes from the Last Judgement.

Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens

Museum
9 minutes away
Palazzo Pitti in Florence was once the palace of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, formerly inhabited by the Medici, Lorraine and Savoy dynasties. It is situated in Piazza Pitti, in the Oltrarno, about a ten-minute walk from our Florence hotel. Palazzo Pitti hosts several galleries: an art gallery (the Palatine, with masterpieces by Raphael, Titian, etc.) arranged according to the criterion of eighteenth-century paintings, monumental apartments, the Modern Art section (with the works of Macchiaioli) and other specialised museums: the Museo degli Argenti, dedicated to applied arts, the Costume museum, the most important one focusing on fashion, the Porcelain and the Carriage Museums. The Giardini dei Boboli, one of the best examples of Italian gardens, are located behind the main building of the Palazzo.

Giotto, Simone Martini, Piero della Francesca, Beato Angelico, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Mantegna, Correggio, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Caravaggio are just some of the Italian artists you will see here. The gallery also has a vast selection of German, Dutch and Flemish masters. Among these: Dürer, Rembrandt and Rubens. The Gallery is situated on the top floor of the large building designed by Giorgio Vasari. It was founded by Grand-Duke Francesco I and subsequently added to by the Medici family. It was rearranged and expanded by the Lorraine dynasty and finally by the State of Italy. The Contini Bonacossi collection and the Prints and Drawings of the Uffizi are also on display.
