Tapas & Gastronomy - Barrio de Las Letras

Recreation
1 minute away
The Literary Quarter is named after the great literary figures who walked its streets in the Golden Age. Cervantes, Quevedo and Lope de Vega all frequented this area between Paseo del Prado and Plaza de Santa Ana, one of the most popular in Madrid for its charming pedestrian streets and many shops and restaurants, making it especially lively at weekends. Head to Plaza de Santa Ana square to discover a great selection of bars specialising in beer. And if you take a stroll down Calle de León or Calle de Huertas, towards Paseo del Prado, you’ll come across some wonderful traditional pubs, many of them over a century old. The area is usually brimming with people visiting the marvellous museums on the Paseo del Arte or heading to Teatro Español or Teatro de la Comedia to catch a show. Templo de Debod

Historical landmark
2 km away
This temple was donated to Spain by the Republic of Egypt in 1968. If not moved, the Debod Temple would have been flooded by the building of a dam. The temple was built approximately 2200 years ago to honor the gods Amon and Isis. Constructed in the Nubian town of Debod (thus its name), it was later enlarged and redecorated by the Ptolemanic pharaohs and the Roman emperors.

El Retiro Park

Park
1 km away
The Parque del Buen Retiro is the most popular park in Madrid. It can get crowded during weekends when many Madrilenian families go for a stroll in the park and street musicians, sidewalk painters, fortune tellers, jugglers and street performers animate the crowd. The Retiro Park was created as a royal park; it belonged to the Real Sitio del Buen Retiro palace. In 1632, the palace was built by King Philips IV as a retreat for the Royal family. Retiro stands for retreat, hence the name of the park and palace. At the time the park was well outside the city walls, but now Madrid has completely enclosed the Retiro park. The 130ha or 320acre large royal park opened to the public in 1868. It is partially laid out in a formal French style, while other parts are more natural.

The square also plays host to events such as the drum parade at Easter, outdoor concerts, and the city's Christmas market in December, so be sure to check the calendar when you're visiting.
