Midrand is an up-and-coming suburb of Johannesburg, a small, prosperous and young neighborhood. Its formation goes back to the 1980s, when it established itself as a municipality adjacent to Sandton, but was drawn back into the greater Johannesburg fold following the end of apartheid. Midrand event venues include a convention center.
Midrand is 15 miles north of OR Tambo International Airport (JNB), to which flights arrive from all over the world, including ones from Atlanta, New York and Washington, DC-Dulles.
Chief among convention venues in Midrand, the Gallagher Convention Centre is also home to the Pan-African Parliament. Its venues include five exhibition halls covering 270,000 square feet of space, as well as an auditorium for 400 persons, Estate Ballroom for 1,200, seven meeting rooms and Wine Garden Restaurant, among other spaces.
Hotel venues in Midrand catering to meetings and events include the 112-room Protea Hotel Samrand, which has meeting space for 40 persons; the 118-room Town Lodge Midrand, which has a meeting room; the 108-room Midrand Executive Hotel, which is right opposite the Gallagher Convention Centre; the 92-room Mercure Johannesburg Midrand, which has one meeting room; and the 32-room Villa Via, which has gorgeous gardens and conference space for up to 25 persons.
Unique gathering spots here include Lory Park, a zoo, animal rehabilitation center and wildlife sanctuary that has a tea garden and can put on corporate functions; Kyalami Country Club, which has an 18-hole golf course, is ranked among the best in the continent and has a clubhouse for functions; Kyalami Kart Circuit, a motorsports venue that can host events of up to 850 persons and has a seminar room and restaurant; South African Lipizzaners Venue, where examples of these horses (first received in 1944) have been bred successfully, has a 14,000-square-foot hall for functions that can include horse displays; and Forest Walk, a beautiful venue surrounded by gardens and trees that can put on events and dinners for up to 140 persons in spaces such as its 2,500-square-foot, thatched area.
Restaurants in Midrand that can host large parties include Italian-fare Da Vincenzo's, which can host conferences as well as dinners in such spaces as an outdoor patio overlooking its gardens; Shaguma Garden Cafe, which is part of a small shopping village and has both indoor and outdoor dining space; Blue Feather, a fine-dining spot that has room for groups and a chef who has worked for such culinary notables as Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal (he also cooked for Queen Elizabeth II); the 80-seat Courier Restaurant, which is part of the Swiss Club that has space for corporate events of up to 200 persons; and Titolino's, another Italian, which has an upstairs dining room able to seat 30 persons.
