Opera National De Paris

Historical landmark
15 minutes away
Located on Place de l’Opéra, built between 1861 and 1875 by the architect Charles Garnier, the Palais Garnier opera house has a richly decorated facade, a monumental staircase, and a 1,900-seat Italian auditorium with a ceiling painted by Marc Chagall, lit by a huge crystal chandelier. This building is a perfect example of 19th-century architecture hiding its metallic structure under lots of decorative features. From 1881 to the present day it has undergone several periods of restoration and modernization work that has made it more functional. Maria Callas and Rudolf Nureyev are some of the many artists who have contributed to the history of opera and ballet here. Until the opening of the Bastille opera house, the Palais Garnier opera house presented only ballet. Since then, it has returned to its original vocation of being an academy for music, dance and opera.

Canal Saint Martin

Park
2 minutes away
Inaugurated in 1825, it joins the Ourcq Canal to the Port de l’Arsenal at Bastille (discovery boat trips available). In the 1970s plans were made to cover the waterway. But local residents took action, the Culture Minister André Malraux stepped in and the Canal remained a canal with its rotating bridge and its 9 locks. Today it is much prized a promenade and picnic area.

Musee du Louvre

Museum
20 minutes away
The Louvre, in its successive architectural metamorphoses, has dominated central Paris since the late 12th century. Built on the city's western edge, the original structure was gradually engulfed as the city grew. The dark fortress of the early days was transformed into the modernized dwelling of François I and, later, the sumptuous palace of the Sun King, Louis XIV. The Auditorium at the Louvre offers a complete program of lectures, concerts, and films linked to the collections and to events taking place at the museum

Le Marais

Historical landmark
2 minutes away
An old royal quarter created in the 14th century, the Marais had its golden age in the 16th century: many luxurious town houses were then built, which can still be seen today. Now a trendy party-going and fashion area living day and night, passers-by will encounter artistes and stylists who cruise the lively streets crammed with designer shops, art galleries, restaurants and trendy bars. Visiting the nearby Musée Cognacq-Jay dedicated to the refined art of the 18th century is a must. From there, go to the Place des Vosges where Victor Hugo lived, whose house is now a museum open to visitors.
