Suriname is the smallest sovereign nation in South America, with most of its population living in or around the capital, Paramaribo, where the primary Suriname event venues are found. Guyana is to its west, French Guiana to its east, Brazil to its south and the Atlantic Ocean to its north. Formerly Dutch Guiana, this small country retains its strong links to The Netherlands; however, here drivers drive on the left, as they do in the UK.
The principal airport is Johan Adolf Pengel International (PBM), also known as Paramaribo-Zanderij International, which is 30 miles south of Paramaribo. There is no direct service from North America, the best option being on Caribbean Airlines via Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
There are no dedicated convention venues in Suriname. Meeting hotels in Paramaribo include the 145-room Courtyard by Marriott Paramaribo, with three meeting rooms; the 84-room Hotel Krasnapolsky Suriname, with meeting space for up to 180 persons; the 53-room Best Western Elegance Suriname, with two meeting rooms; and the 30-room Queen's Hotel & Casino, which has three meeting rooms. One choice outside of Paramaribo is the 45-room Bergendal Eco & Cultural River Resort, which has space for meetings of up to 150 persons and is a sibling to the Hotel Krasnapolsky Suriname. The Bergendal has a tropical rainforest location on the Suriname River, 50 miles south of Paramaribo.
There are not too many special event venues in Suriname that are able to host groups. Paramaribo's Dutch Colonial center, now a UNESCO site, is a good place to begin to look, but most function spaces will be in the hotels already listed or in others. The 132-room Torarica Hotel & Casino has a conference room and a marina and clubhouse on its pier, while its sibling, also in Paramaribo, the impressive, 105-room Royal Torarica' has the Torarica Country Club. Outdoor events can be arranged at the Palm Gardens, which are right behind the Presidential Palace, and Fort Nieuw Amsterdam. Lastly, a spot with very nice gallery space for events is the Museum of Fine Arts Paramaribo, which opened on Zwartenhovenbrug Street in 2011 and has plans to expand.
As with the special event venues in Paramaribo, the majority of restaurants suitable for groups will be in the city's hotels. Non-hotel choices include Mirosso and Sarinah, two Indonesian restaurants, the latter a little more formal. One great hotel restaurant is Rumors, at the Hotel Krasnapolsky Suriname, which features music.
