Student Scholarship Application for ACN 2017 Conference

Through the generosity of donors, the American College of Nutrition is able to offer several scholarships to students who are planning to attend the ACN annual conference. The following scholarships are open at all current ACN student members.

Scholarship Details

  • All scholarships include complimentary conference registration.
  • Late submissions will not be accepted. It is the applicant's responsibility to submit all required information by the scholarship deadline.
  • Applicants must certify that s/he plans to attend the entire conference for which s/he received the conference scholarship.
  • Attendance at the conference will be verified prior to the release of the monies. Checks are distributed three (3) weeks following the ACN conference.

Checklist Prior to Starting Application

  • Updated Resume/CV
  • Proof of school status (school ID or letter from Registrar’s Office)
  • Brief statement (maximum of 400 words) answering: Tell us why you want to attend the ACN conference, what your goals for attending the conference are and what you hope to take away from the material presented.
  • Letter of recommendation from current school or a faculty member

Oral Abstract Presentation: $1,000

Deadline: August 31, 2017

This scholarship is open to all students who are members of the ACN. All student research submissions should address an aspect of nutrition science and be of interest to professionals in the field, with special attention to our conference theme, Disrupting Cancer: The Role of Personalized Nutrition. Proposals will be reviewed for scientific content, objectivity and relevance of subject matter. Winners will present an overview of their research at the ACN conference. Poster Presentation: $1,000

Deadline: August 31, 2017

This scholarship is open to all students who are members of the ACN. All student research submissions should address an aspect of nutrition science and be of interest to professionals in the field, with special attention to our conference theme, Disrupting Cancer: The Role of Personalized Nutrition. Proposals will be reviewed for scientific content, objectivity and relevance of subject matter. Winners will showcase their poster at the conference. Clinical Case Study: $500

Deadline: September 30, 2017

This scholarship is open to all students who are members of the ACN. Students applying for this scholarship will demonstrate the clinical application of nutrition by submitting a case study on a client. Cases are required to meet the following criteria:

  1. Involves a chronic health issue for which a significant part of the treatment plan includes dietary and nutritional supplement components
  2. Involves a minimum of two sessions with the patient to allow for sufficient monitoring and follow-up regarding outcomes of your treatment plan.

Case studies will include aspects of the core CNS competencies including Nutrition Assessment, Nutrition Intervention, Counseling & Management and Nutrition Monitoring & Evaluation. The case study will be submitted using the provided template. Application attachments for this scholarship include:

Community Outreach and Education: $500

Deadline: September 30, 2017

This scholarship is open to all students who are members of the ACN who are demonstrating initiative, leadership and organizational skills by hosting a community outreach or educational event on the topic of nutrition within the past 12 months. Applicants will be required to submit a summary of the event along with five (5) pictures of the event. Applicants agree to allow the ACN to share pictures of their event on their social media pages, website and at the annual conference. Application attachments for this scholarship include:

  • Date of Event
  • Location of Event (Event can be held at a community location such as church, schools, health fairs, etc.)
  • Topic of Event (i.e. "Managing Diabetes Through Nutrition)
  • Goal of the Event
  • Number of Attendees
  • Brief Summary of the Event (maximum 500 words)
  • Submission of 5 pictures
  • Optional: Submission of e-vite or event email announcement, submission of flyer promoting event, screen shot of social media messaging and video clips from event. 

 

Theme Based Essay: $500

Deadline: September 30, 2017

This scholarship is open to all students who are members of the ACN. Applicants are required to submit a 3-5 page essay on the conference topic. For 2017, the theme of the conference is Disrupting Cancer: The Role of Personalized Nutrition. The conference highlights the following:

  • Nutritional Genomics & Systems Biology
  • Modulating the Microbial Landscape
  • The Role of Metabolism
  • Evidence for Nutrition in Prevention, Therapy & Recovery
  • Micronutrients & Phytonutrients in Cancer

Applicants can choose to focus the essay on any one (1) topic listed. Referencing recent research is required as well as AMA format. Application attachments for this scholarship include:

First time conference attendees: $200 each

Deadline: September 30, 2017

This scholarship is open to all students who are members of the ACN but have not attended an American College of Nutrition conference in previous years. Students who receive this award agree to volunteer at the conference for a minimum of 4 hours with registration, hosting or reporting of sessions. Winners also agree to

  1. Post about their experience on their social media pages using the conference hashtag #ACN17
  2. Complete a post conference summary to be shared with future student attendees within 45 days of the completion of the conference.

This award is lottery based.
