2019-20 Service in Schools Kids Action Team Application

Service in Schools (SIS) invites elementary school teachers (grades K-5) to apply to launch a SIS Kids Action Team at their school. The Kids Action Team will meet at least once a week from December 2019 to May 2020 and complete a service project by May 2020. Selected teachers will participate in two full-day professional learning sessions on Tuesday, December 10 and Tuesday, January 28 during which they will learn how to maximize their Kids Action Team’s impact and student engagement. Selected teachers will also receive on and off-site support from the SIS team to sustain the Kids Action Team’s service activities, including project brainstorming and developing a service-learning project through which their students will take action to address a community need. The SIS Kids Action Team Program culminates with the Celebration of Service on Thursday, May 28, 2020 from 10:00am-12:30pm in downtown Brooklyn, where the students from each Kids Action Team will share out their service accomplishments with peers, families, and other community stakeholders.

Teachers selected to participate in the program must attend the two full-day professional learning sessions, schedule a site visit from the SIS team for on-the-ground support of Kids Action Team’s activities, facilitate a service project with students by May 2020, and attend the SIS Kids Action Team Celebration of Service with student members. Click the 'Apply' button below to begin the application. Applications are due by Monday, October 28, 2019.

In order to be eligible for this program, the applicant must:

  • be a classroom or cluster teacher who is able to meet with their Kids Action Team after-school at least once a week; and

  • work in a New York City public elementary school (this program is for students in grades K-5 only).

SIS Kids Action Team Program Goals
Through the SIS Kids Action Team Program, teachers will implement and document a service-learning project with their student members from December 2019 to May 2020. For participating teachers, this looks like:

  • launching a Kids Action Team that meets weekly;
  • implementing a variety of strategies and activities introduced in professional learning sessions and program materials;
  • curating media and other resources for students’ investigation of a community need;
  • reaching out to administration, colleagues, and community stakeholders to arrange for logistics of service activities and participation in the Celebration of Service on May 28, 2020;
  • helping students to develop an impactful service initiative to address a community need and present their work at the Celebration of Service; and
  • communicating progress to the SIS program team through site visits and email/phone communications.

    After completing the Kids Action Team program, teachers will be able to:

    • expand their Kids Action Team’s membership and service efforts;
    • lead peers through a basic understanding of service-learning and its benefits; and
    • continue to connect and collaborate on service initiatives with fellow participants and the SIS team.

    Students will:

    • brainstorm, plan, and carry out a service-learning project through which they will take action to meet a community need; and
    • gain experience presenting their work to audiences of peers and adults.

 SIS Kids Action Team Program Structure

  • Teachers selected to facilitate a SIS Kids Action Team will be expected to attend two full-day professional learning sessions on Tuesday, December 10 and Tuesday, January 28 from 8:30am-3:00pm.

  • Professional learning sessions will take place on school days, and the Kids Action Team program will cover the cost of per diem substitute coverage for all teachers in attendance. • By early January, teachers will recruit a group of 15-30 students to participate in the Kids Action Team and hold meetings at least once a week after school.

  • Over the course of the program, teachers will share their service activities, successes, and challenges with fellow Kids Action Team facilitators and will receive free resources and tools for implementing a service-learning with elementary school students.

  • Teachers will collaborate regularly with the SIS team through site visits and email communications to implement a successful service project by May 2020.

  • Teachers must work with students and their families to arrange for their participation in the SIS Kids Action Team Celebration of Service that will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2020 from 10:00am-12:30pm in downtown Brooklyn.
