 The Genovesi Environmental Study Center (GESC) offers rich and engaging experiential environmental science programs for students and teachers at all grade levels. Nestled in the Bergen Beach section of Brooklyn, this 7,000 square foot learning center, sitting on over an acre of beautiful grounds, is home to over 200 living organisms, four dynamic learning labs (Flora, Fauna, STEM, and a fully equipped biotechnology lab), an outdoor learning space with pond habitat and urban garden, and a fully functioning greenhouse. 

As a premier informal science destination space, GESC’s mission is to deliver hands-on environmental science and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) instruction. Through targeted standards-based enrichment programs, the highly trained GESC staff encourage students to explore the natural world around them and become stewards for the environment. Our programs are age and grade appropriate, and aligned to the NYC Science Scope & Sequence, the Common Core Learning Standards, and the New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards.

• We are a DOE facility, and just like your school, we are committed to implementing health and safety measures to create conditions at GESC that keep all visiting students and adults safe.
• All students and staff have the option to wear a face covering while at GESC.
• Physical distancing, where possible, will be maintained to reduce transmission risk. When it is not possible to maintain physical distance, we ask all staff and students to join us in being especially vigilant in following all health and safety guidelines.
• In order to protect staff and students while at GESC, all non-DOE chaperone-visitors must show proof of having at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination. If a visitor wishes to enter GESC but is unable or unwilling to show proof of vaccination, the chaperone-visitor may not enter, absent emergency circumstances. Additionally, all chaperone-visitors must complete the DOE’s daily health screening.
