Bregenz Festival

Theater
Every year, the lake stage of the Bregenz Festival Theatre attracts thousands of spectators who are enchanted by the singers and musicians in the glow of the evening light. However, you need to take a guided tour behind the scenes of the stage to find out that sophisticated technology which functions perfectly both under and above water, is behind all of this. When you watch the opera later on, you can observe the goings-on with an expert eye and feel more than just amazement for the brilliant teamwork which is being played out on the lake. The scenery of the world’s biggest lake stage is changed every two years.

Fine Spirits Tasting

If you order a local schnapps in Vorarlberg, you’d better be prepared for a wide choice. Numerous products from local distilleries are also attracting attention when it comes to international competition. Sampling the award-winning distillates in the distillery itself and getting to know the people behind the colourless spirits bestows the sampler with a completely new understanding and treats them to a completely new taste experience. Spending the night at one of the mobile distilleries which are still in service in many towns is also recommended. One such place is in Rankweil, where the next generation is also burning with desire for the self-distilled schnapps and burn the midnight oil in the cold autumn.

Kunsthaus Bregenz

Museum
The Kunsthaus Bregenz is one of the most important museum buildings in the world when it comes to contemporary architecture. It has been attracting art enthusiasts as well as fans of architecture ever since its inauguration in 1997. An hour-long guided tour on the theme of architecture affords attendees a look behind the scenes of the multi-award-winning building by architect Peter Zumthor. The structure of the building and its steel structure are visible, and the magic of 1997’s prize winner of the much sought-after Mies van der Rohe Award is only increased.

Karren Cable Car

Recreation
It’s possible to either walk up the Karren, which takes around an hour, or use the cable car, which takes just a few minutes. The cable car takes passengers up to a height of 976 metres above sea level. The panoramic view of the Swiss mountains, the Rhine Valley and Lake Constance is always captivating at any time of year. The cable car operates until late in the evening. The view from the top station extends to Lake Constance, across the Rhine Valley to the Swiss mountains. The panorama restaurant, a modern glass building, thrones above a rocky promontory. Hiking trails lead from here to the mountain- and hiking-village of Ebnit and to the Rappenloch and Alplochschlucht (gorge).

Schattenburg Castle

Historical landmark
What has now become Feldkirch’s landmark was built to protect the town and its residents in around 1260. It was the ancestral seat of the Counts of Montfort, who, during the Middle Ages, rose to become the reigning aristocratic family in the region that is today Vorarlberg. The castle walls, the beautiful castle keep, the ancient rooms and the unique courtyard create a medieval atmosphere. Food and refreshments are served in cosy and stylish lounges of the Schlosswirtschaft Schattenburg. The Schattenburg castle is particularly suitable for groups as it has many rooms and other sights for everyone to marvel at.

Cheese Cellar Lingenau

The newly constructed cooperative cheese cellar in Lingenau is home to 32,000 cheeses. A visit to the cheese – which matures for between four and 18 months – constitutes an impressive walk through the storeroom at 10.5°C. Young cheese is attended to daily, with robots cleaning its surface with salt water, and older cheeses being cleaned less frequently. Cheese tasting at the end of the tour turns the trip into a sensuous experience, and is accompanied by matching wines. The visit is also worthwhile from an architectural point of view, since the modern building by Oskar Leo Kaufmann emphasises the reduction to the essential, whilst the cheese wheels take on the appearance of an impressive installation.

GPS Snow Shoe Hike

Recreation
With snow shoes on your feet, a GPS in your hand and a tricky mission in mind, teams demonstrate what can be achieved if you all pull together. Especially when you are faced with a tough counterpart that fans the flames of the treasure hunt – things get awkward in the absence of good coordination. Even the most boring of colleagues gets carried away when faced with so much fun and excitement, coupled with an array of challenges. Once the entire group starts slipping about the snow-covered field on their knees and ploughing through every centimetre with their hands, they have at least located the treasure and are standing – or kneeling – in front of the goal. Only speed is of the essence here – or indeed the right amount of luck.
