Doc Ford's Rum Bar & Grille

0 mi. away
An intro from NYTimes Bestselling Author, Randy Wayne White: My mystic-debunking protagonist, Doc Ford, would try, but even he wouldn’t deny the transcendent power of this place. Here is how Ford described it: South Seas Island Resort, at the northern tip of Captiva Island, is one of Florida’s historic treasures. Almost five hundred acres of tropical theater that, over the years, has provided luxuriant solitude to luminaries from around the world. Cold, hard fact. Walk to the bay: Teddy Roosevelt lived on a houseboat there, where Thomas Edison fished for Tarpon, and Charles Lindbergh landed his first seaplane. Stroll to the beach: Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Edna St. Vincent Malay, Thornton Wilder and James Jones all ruminated over books in the same bright space you now enjoy -- like Katherine Hepburn and Clark Gable before you. Here is where my zen-hipster character, Tomlinson, would interrupt to remind us that any asset bigger than a bikini is just extra baggage, and the islands are indifferent to fame. In Tomlinson’s words: Captiva is a breathing vessel grounded by sea currents, anchored to stars, an island of small secrets, moonrise to sunset, where sand adsorbs footprints in an astronomy of dreams, and one beach bum soul, eternal. -- Randy Wayne White

Cayo Costa National Park

10 mi. away
With nine miles of beautiful beaches and acres of pine forests, oak-palm hammocks and mangrove swamps, this barrier island park is a Gulf Coast paradise. Cayo Costa is accessible only by private boat or ferry. Visitors may see manatees and pods of dolphins in the waters around the 2,426 acre park, as well as a spectacular assortment of birds. On the island, visitors can swim or snorkel in the surf, enjoy the sun and picnic in the shade. Keep your eyes peeled as you stroll along the beach, especially during the winter months. The nature trails that crisscross the island provide opportunities for hiking and off-road bicycling. Saltwater anglers can fish from their boats or throw a line out into the surf. An amphitheater provides educational programs about the island's ecology and history. For overnight stays, the park offers primitive cabins and tent camping. Captiva Cruises offers ferry service to the park for locations in Punta Gorda, Pine Island, Fort Myers, Sanibel Island and Captiva Island. Reservations suggested.
