Der Poseidontempel befindet sich direkt gegenüber dem Resort und ist von mehreren Kilometern aus gut zu sehen. Der Tempel wurde zu Ehren des alten Meeresgottes erbaut und stammt aus den Jahren 444-440 v. Chr. und wurde aus lokalem weißem Marmor im dorischen Stil erbaut. Es war das Symbol der athenischen Macht und eine wichtige religiöse und maritime Ikone der Antike - es war sowohl das letzte Zeichen der Zivilisation als auch das erste Zeichen der Heimat für Generationen athenischer Seeleute.
Der Legende nach ist Kap Sounio der Ort, an dem Ägeus, König von Athen, von der Klippe in den Tod sprang und damit der Ägäis seinen Namen gab. Der englische Dichter Lord Byron hat seinen Namen auf eine der vorderen Säulen des Tempels geschnitzt.
Besuchen Sie den Tempel über die Straße vom Hotel aus oder indem Sie in der kleinen geschützten Bucht am Fuße der Klippen des Tempels ankern und dann zum Denkmal wandern. Die Aussicht auf den Sonnenuntergang durch die Ruinen des Tempels gilt als eine der berühmtesten Sehenswürdigkeiten in ganz Griechenland.
