Sapelo ist eine staatlich verwaltete Barriereinsel, die viertgrößte in der Kette der Küsteninseln Georgiens zwischen den Flüssen Savannah und St. Marys. Reynolds restauriert. Es bietet Übernachtungsmöglichkeiten für Gruppen. Das Herrenhaus betreibt auch einen öffentlichen Strandcampingplatz in Cabretta.

Dies ist das älteste englische Fort, das an der Küste Georgiens erhalten geblieben ist. Von 1721 bis 1736 war Fort King George der südliche Außenposten des britischen Empire in Nordamerika. Ein Zypressenblockhaus, eine Kaserne und eine palisadenartige Erdfestung wurden 1721 von Pfadfindern unter der Leitung von Colonel John „Tuscarora Jack“ Barnwell errichtet. In den nächsten sieben Jahren besetzte die Unabhängige Kompanie Seiner Majestät das Fort. Sie erlebten unglaubliche Härten durch Krankheiten, drohende spanische und indische Angriffe und die raue, ungewohnte Küstenumgebung. Nachdem das Fort verlassen worden war, brachte General James Oglethorpe 1736 schottische Highlander an den Standort. Die Siedlung, Darien genannt, wurde schließlich bis 1925 zu einem führenden Exportzentrum für Holz.
