THE AMADOR CAUSEWAY & FRANK GEHRY BIODIVERSITY MUSEUM
Museum
25 mins
The Amador Causeway is a road connecting mainland Panama City with four Pacific islands, which form a small archipelago. The islands of this archipelago are Naos, Perico, Culebra and Flamenco.
This road was built in 1913, with the Gaillard Cut rocks excavated during construction of the Panama Canal. The site was originally part of a US military complex known as Fort Amador, established to protect the entrance to the canal.
Close to it is the entrance of the Biodiversity Museum,
Designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, the Biomuseo is his first work in Latin America and the tropics. The building was designed to tell the story of how the Isthmus of Panama emerged from the sea, linking two continents, separating a big ocean in two and changing the biodiversity of the planet forever.
Historical Monumental Complex of Panama Viejo, designated as such by Law 91 December 1976 and also known as Archaeological Site of Panama Viejo or Old Panama, is located within the modern city of Panama, between the mouths of the rivers Algarrobo and down, off the coast of the Pacific Ocean at the narrowest section of the Isthmus.
The first function of Panama was closely related with the expeditions of conquest on their way to South America, but its strategic role as the hub of one of the most important trade routes of the time placed the city in a privileged position and score from then his fate as a territory in the service of international transit.
In 1671 the city was destroyed in the attack of the English pirate Henry Morgan and never rebuilt, leaving the remains of the old abandoned for more than two centuries. This radical departure would allow long-term conservation of the archaeological remains of historic buildings and important structures, while the activity of the city was moved to what is now known as Old Town.
This tour begins with a train journey from the Pacific Ocean to the calm waters of the Caribbean Sea. Portobelo is a natural harbor and village in the Republic of Panama. One of the most important towns in America during colonial times and port through which spent most of the wealth that Spain sailed to Europe from the conquest of South America today. Portobelo is located on the north coast of the Isthmus of Panama, about 50 km northeast of Colon city.
One of the most important buildings at that time was La Aduana. Built between 1630 and 1634, its structure reflected the Renaissance model, brought by the Spaniards in these lands. This building was used as a warehouse, tax office, the real deposit boxes, residence of the governor and royal officials. Today, the ruins of Customs are in good condition as it was rebuilt and reused as a museum, where objects from the Spanish era have been found in recent archaeological research shows. This place has finally become a touristic destination.

GunaYala also known as the San Blas Archipelago is an autonomous indigenous region of the Republic of Panama thanks to the revolution "Dule" of 1925.
The Gunas rejected colonial Panamanian police because of some racist acts that went against ancestral beliefs.
They proclaimed themselves an independent republic of Panama.
After negotiations with the government of Panama in 1938, the government gave them full autonomy of the Guna territory.
Over the years Gunas took advantage of this autonomy, keeping their rituals, traditions and language. Guna territory has about 378 islands, including 49 inhabited communities. For the most part, these are used by the Gunas to raise coconut crops, fishing and now tourism.
The territory is used cooperatively, families changing every 3 or 4 months, giving an opportunity to each Guna who wishes to have a supplemental income.
