For those who can't get enough of mall shopping... One of Bangkok's most popular shopping malls, EmQuartier is the stylish young sister to the older Emporium across the road -- the two are joined by an elevated platform that links to the Phrom Phong BTS train station. It combines high-end shopping with a cinema complex, six floors of global dining, and a lovely open-air piazza that leads to a five-story-high waterfall. +66 2 269 1000 BTS Phrom Phong

Located within the grounds of the Grand Palace in Bangkok, the sacred Wat Phra Kaew is also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha – a highly revered Buddha image meticulously carved from a single block of jade. Its origins are lost to time, but the statue is believed to have been discovered in the northern city of Chiang Rai in 1434 A.D., after a stucco Buddha image was struck by lightning, revealing the remarkable treasure within. The Emerald Buddha is raised on a series of platforms which no one is allowed near except His Majesty the King, who performs a cloaking ceremony three times a year. The auspicious ritual is believed to bring good luck and fortune to each season.

For those looking for a downtown party... Not so long ago, Bangkok's rooftop bars were all located down by the river, but recent years has seen them spread eastwards along Sukhumvit Road, where the downtown location means you're surrounded by the city. Pick of the bunch is this 32-story bar, which sets itself apart by being spread over three floors, a menu full of Peruvian-Japanese cuisine, and garden décor. +66 2 038 5111

For those wanting fine steaks and sweet drinks... This smart two-story venue is more a restaurant with a rooftop than a traditional top-floor bar. On the lower floor you find a sophisticated, old world-styled grill, with a menu of fine steaks, grilled scallops and lobster bisque. For those who love to have fun and dance... For those who like a taste of China... Chinatown is one of the busiest districts in the city. By day it's a thriving shopping destination, with small side lanes filled with stores selling everything from fruit to fashion. Then, as night falls, it's transformed into a vibrant food market, as hundreds of small stalls set up shop along the street, selling a spectacular selection of Thai-Chinese dishes, such as roast pork noodles.
