Local Attractions

Research Park at the University of Illinois

The Research Park at the University of Illinois was created by the University of Illinois to advance its economic development mission. The University allocated 200 acres adjacent to central campus for development of the technology park. Fox/Atkins is the private development partner. Within 10 years the Research Park transformed agricultural green field land from fish ponds and swine facilities into a vibrant technology park with 12 buildings housing 90 companies and 1400 employees. EnterpriseWorks, the incubator managed by the University of Illinois, provides strong entrepreneurial support including an entrepreneur-in-residence program to help advance new companies. The corporations have research relationships with the University that have resulted in sponsored research, curriculum and teaching contributions, faculty consulting, and sub-contracting of federal grants.

Four hundred feet across, it at one time was one of the only two-edge supported domes in the world. The roof is supported by 614 miles of one-quarter inch steel wire wrapped at the base of the dome under intensive pressure. The architect was Max Abramovitz, a distinguished University of Illinois alumnus. His firm also designed the United Nations Buildings, much of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the University of Illinois’ own Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. In seating capacity, State Farm Center ranks among the great arenas of major cities. It has nearly 15,500 permanent seats, but when portable chairs are placed on the floor for an in-the-round performance there is a potential of up to 16,500 depending on the size of the stage. The third largest Illinois arena outside of The United Center in Chicago and Allstate Arena in Rosemont, State Farm Center continues to present the hottest and most exciting performers and events in the world!

Japan House & Gardens

1 mi. away
The role of the garden in Japan House's environment and teachings is almost impossible to calculate. For many people, wandering through the Arboretum and coming upon the gardens is their first exposure to Japan House. Others might come to Japan House for a tea ceremony and then learn how integral the garden is in welcoming them and preparing them for the experience of tea. Without a doubt Japan House could not teach its lessons without the James and Lorene Bier Gardens. Their generosity has been an incredible gift to all of us and without them we would not have the experiential cultural resource that is Japan House & Gardens.
