South Knoxville is such a fun area of Knoxville to explore. If you head up to the Sunsphere and fix your gaze directly south across the Tennessee River, you’ll notice it looks a little undeveloped compared to the cool city that surrounds you. That, my friends, is what we call the “Urban Wilderness” – a 1,000 acre stretch of land that provides plenty of opportunity to hike, bike, rock climb, paddleboard, kayak, and more. Today we’d like to take you on a sample weekend excursion to South Knoxville aka SoKno. If you like the outdoors, beer, and chill vibes – this is the neighborhood in Knoxville for you!

Enjoy Knoxville's Grand Entertainment Palace—The Historic Tennessee Theater. The magnificent Tennessee Theatre first opened its doors on October 1, 1928 and was hailed as “the South’s most beautiful theater. Designed by Chicago architects Graven & Mayger, the Theatre has a Spanish-Moorish style interior that incorporates elements from all parts of the world. It was one of the first public places in Knoxville to have air-conditioning. Its 80-year history includes highs and lows, from when movies reigned as the chosen form of entertainment to the decline and uncertain future of downtown. In 1996, the Historic Tennessee Theatre Foundation, a non-profit organization, was founded with the purpose of preserving, maintaining, and operating the Theater. The former movie palace reopened on January 15, 2005 as a world-class performing arts center—the result of a $25.5 million renovation and restoration project funded through public and private donations. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and honored as the Official State Theatre of Tennessee, today's Tennessee Theatre has something for everyone: classical music, vintage films, dance, drama, and stellar performances by today's hottest musicians. Local arts organizations such as the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Knoxville Opera, at UT Cultural Attractions use the Tennessee Theatre throughout the year.

University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is one of the oldest public universities in the country. It has also had three names before becoming the University of Tennessee. It started off as Blount College in 1794, two years before Tennessee became a state. In 1826, the university dissolved its partnership with the academy and moved to what is now known as the Hill. UT expanded again under the leadership of Andy Holt, president from 1959 to 1970. In 2011, UT launched a yearlong celebration to mark this event and the legacy of a half-century of African American achievement on campus. The previous decade has brought about a new wave of change and growth. A change in the state constitution allowed for a state lottery and dedicated funds for lottery scholarships for Tennessee students. A surge in applications since 2003 has attracted the state’s best and brightest students, resulting in a significant rise in the academic qualifications of its entering freshman, enhanced freshman to sophomore retention, and higher overall graduation rates. Recent honors include a National Academy of Sciences member (2012), three Fulbright Scholars (2012), three National Science Foundation CAREER Award winners (2012), Margalef Award winner, seven American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellows (2012).
