Kiyomizu Temple
Kiyomizu Temple
Historical landmark
The Kiyomizu 'Pure Water' Temple was built in 778 on the site on the Otowa Waterfall in the hills east of Kyoto. Visitors are invited to drink the water from the pools below the temple, fed by three streams believed to bring success, love and longevity. Be sure to only drink one gulp from one pool: any more is considered greedy and means you'll receive no benefits at all! The temple defies traditional building techniques, constructed without the use of a single nail. The main hall - supported by 139 pillars - cantilevers over the hillside and offers incredible city and forest views. Other highlights include the cherry blossoms in spring and the Jishu Shrine, dedicated to the god oflove and matchmaking: if you can close your eyes and walk the 18-metre (60-feet) distance between the Jishu 'love stones', you'll find true love in life. Access from the hotel: 5 minutes by Car / 20 minutes by walk
