Marine Drive is a 3-kilometre-long boulevard in South Mumbai in the city of Mumbai. The highlight of Marine drive is the beautiful promenade along the road where many of the citizens take in a breath of fresh air and view the daily sunsets. At the northern end of Marine Drive is Chowpatty Beach. Real estate prices along the esplanade are among the highest in India, and fourth in the world. Many hotels dot the drive, namely The Oberoi, Trident & the Intercontinental. Marine Drive is also known as the Queen's Necklace because if viewed at night from an elevated point anywhere along the drive, the street lights resemble a string of pearls, forming a necklace. It is also the world's largest viewing gallery and hence has been a host to a number of events that take place along the promenade.

Mumbai's most famous monument, it was built as a triumphal arch to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary, complete with four turrets and intricate latticework carved into the yellow basalt stone. Ironically, when the Raj ended in 1947, this colonial symbol also became a sort of epitaph: the last of the British ships that set sail for England left from the Gateway.

Dhobi Ghat
Historical landmark

A unique feature of Mumbai, the dhobi is a traditional laundryman, who will collect your dirty linen, wash it, and return it neatly pressed to your doorstep. The laundries are called Dhobi Ghats which have rows of concrete wash pens each fitted with its own flogging stone. The clothes are soaked in sudsy water, thrashed on the flogging stones, then tossed into huge vats of boiling starch and hung out to dry. Next they are ironed and piled into neat bundles. Two hundred dhobis and their families work together in what has always been a hereditary occupation.
