When it opens in 2016, the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC) will stand out not only for its intelligent design and comprehensive facilities, but because it will also shed light on a newly emerging destination ripe for events of any scale. Encompassing 220,000 square feet of column-free exhibition space, ten meeting rooms, and 3,200-seat and 450-seat auditoriums, the OCEC will also have two banquet halls able to seat 2,350 and 1,000 guests, respectively. In addition, a 4,000-space parking garage, VIP pavilion, food court, speaker preparation room, and business center will complement the facility’s meeting spaces. Although the OCEC will seek to primarily host international and regional conventions, its flexible design will allow it to accommodate exhibitions, concerts, banquets, and a wide range of special events. Also under construction next door is a mixed-use precinct consisting of a shopping mall, commercial business park, and 1,000 hotel rooms, including a five-star JW Marriott, two four-star hotels including a Crowne Plaza, and one three-star property. It is a purpose-built convention center within two miles of an international airport, with direct road access, and in a fully integrated precinct that accommodates the needs of all of its international, regional, and local attendees. Meeting Planners should consider the Sultanate of Oman as it offers a true Arabian experience with traditional souqs, five-star hotels, UNESCO World Heritage sites, plus a just-as-varied landscape of desert, mountains, and 1,200 miles of pristine coastline.
