The Chicago Athenaeum Sculpture Park
The Chicago Athenaeum Sculpture Park

Sculpture has most often been made to occupy open areas, in civic squares and in gardens, or to adorn the facades of buildings or mark sacred sites. The grounds that lie inside the Schaumburg Municipal Complex were configured to display The Chicago Athenaeum's extensive collection of contemporary sculpture. This garden was planned 20 years ago by the Greek architect and artist, Ioannis Karalias. The diagonal of the main pathway cuts across the gardens where the sculptures are placed within the natural confines of the open native Midwest Prairie. Displayed in outside rooms are sculptures made by International and American artists. Most of the sculptures were bought and placed in the garden during the late 1990s and reflect the abstract, industrial aesthetic of that time, however there are some works that are more evocative, for example the Vineland sculpture by the Norwegian artist, Jarle Rosseland, is a Stonehenge-like configuration that emulates an ancient Viking Ship that was once used to discover the Americas. The International Sculpture Park is a unique public-private partnership between The Village of Schaumburg and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.

Brookfield Zoo, also known as the Chicago Zoological Park, is a zoo located in the Chicago suburb of Brookfield, Illinois. It houses around 450 species of animals in an area of 216 acres. It opened on July 1, 1934, and quickly gained international recognition for using moats and ditches instead of cages to separate animals from visitors and from other animals. The zoo was also the first in America to exhibit giant pandas, one of which has been taxidermied and put on display in Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History. In 1960, Brookfield Zoo built the nation's first fully indoor dolphin exhibit, and in the 1980s, the zoo introduced Tropic World, the first fully indoor rain forest simulation and the then-largest indoor zoo exhibit in the world.
