The Saylorville Lake Project is 26,000 acres, which stretches for over 50 miles up the Des Moines River Valley. A wide variety of recreational activities are available including fishing, picnic areas with group shelters, boat launches, an accessible fishing pier, river fishing, hunting, and a 24-mile paved, multipurpose trail used for biking, hiking, jogging, walking, and in-line skating.

The Des Moines Civic Center has grown to be the cornerstone of downtown Des Moines’ arts and culture scene. Know Before You Go We have two bridges that are accessible by pavement only – Imes Bridge in St. Charles, and Cutler-Donahoe Bridge at City Park in Winterset. Cedar Bridge is accessible via Cedar Bridge Road, which is mostly pavement south of the bridge. You will only be on gravel for a couple hundred feet. The final three are on gravel/dirt roads – the Roseman, the Hogback and the Holliwell. Holliwell Bridge is on 1.9 miles of gravel after turning right onto Norwood Ave from E. Court Ave. If you access Hogback Bridge from 195th Street, then Hogback Bridge Road, it’s just over two miles of gravel. The Roseman is the furthest on gravel – 4.3 miles if you turn onto Roseman Bridge Road from I-92 to Elderberry. However, if you want to drive on less gravel, keep on I-92 to Elmwood Ave, and it’s only 2.2 miles of gravel.

Living History Farms is an interactive outdoor history museum, which educates and connects all peoples to the many stories of Midwestern rural heritage.

The James H. Andrew Railroad Museum The James H. Andrew Railroad Museum at the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad is a beautiful 9,000 square foot facility featuring a research library, theater and displays featuring memorabilia from all eras of railroading in Iowa. With extensive collections of track equipment, toy trains, dining car china, passenger train timetables, lanterns and more, our museum truly does have something to interest everyone! Library Our library features over 900 books and periodicals related to railroading. The James H. Andrew Railroad Museum and History Center’s library boasts one of the most extensive collections of railroad books in the Midwest. It includes good source and reference material for both the armchair hobbyist and the serious railroad scholar and modeler. The library is divided into 18 different sections with groupings of books in each section. Each section is marked by a bullet.
