Sapelo es una isla barrera administrada por el estado, la cuarta más grande de la cadena de islas costeras de Georgia entre los ríos Savannah y St. Marys. Es el fuerte inglés más antiguo que queda en la costa de Georgia. Desde 1721 hasta 1736, Fort King George fue el puesto avanzado del sur del Imperio Británico en Norteamérica. Los exploradores dirigidos por el coronel John «Tuscarora Jack» Barnwell construyeron en 1721 un fortín de cipreses, un cuartel y un fuerte de tierra empalizada.
