1961年、ジョージ・フィストニッチはわずか21歳のとき、オークランドのマンゲレにある父親から5エーカーの土地を借り、わずか1エーカーのブドウの木から始めました。
ジョージは、1962年にこのブロックから収穫したブドウを使って、ヴィラ・マリアという名前で初めてワインを作りました。
1960年代を通じて、ヴィラ・マリアはジョージの妻ゲイルと共にワンマンバンドとして活動し、彼の事業を支援していました。
