About us

Offering elegant ambiance, friendly service, and world-class functionality, the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square has established itself as an integral part of a magnificent hotel/convention center facility that represents a beloved landmark gathering place. The hotel, integrated seamlessly with the Lancaster County Convention Center, provides unmatched distinction and historic significance through incorporation of important historic structures (the rehabilitated Beaux Arts facade, stately Federal-period William Montgomery House, and Underground Railroad Site as designated by the National Parks Service). Steadily becoming known as a premier convention destination, this trusted brand hotel is positioned with four full years of operation and steady growth. Convenient to major Northeast metropolitan areas, this remarkable Lancaster hotel anchors a historic square in the heart of one of the country's most historically rich and culturally diverse destinations. Additionally, the Downtown setting continues to evolve as a vibrant and artistically rich community – increasingly recognized as a City Authentic where heritage and modern mingle, where quaint meets cosmopolitan. The hotel and convention center only add to the critical mass of this increasingly hip and appealing city.

Lancaster County Historical Society & President James Buchanan's Wheatland
Museum
10 mins
James Buchanan died at Wheatland on June 1, 1868. The 22 acre Wheatland estate was inherited by his niece, Harriet Lane Johnston. Mrs. Johnston, whose principal residence was in Baltimore, used Wheatland primarily as a summer retreat. She sold the estate in 1884 to Lancaster businessman, George B. Willson. Although Willson eventually installed electricity and plumbing, he apparently had a great respect for Wheatland's historical significance and made very few structural alterations. However, in 1893, Willson sold 13 of Wheatland's 22 original acres to Henry Williamson. Upon George Willson's death in 1929, Wheatland was inherited by his cousin, Mary Willson Rettew. Mary Rettew died in 1934, leaving 5 ¾ acres of the estate and funds for the establishment of what later became the Lancaster County Historical Society.
