Van een eenmansband naar een wereldwijd merk in 50 jaar
In 1961, toen hij nog maar 21 jaar oud was, huurde George Fistonich vijf hectare grond van zijn vader in Mangere, Auckland en begon met slechts een hectare wijnstokken.
George maakte zijn eerste wijn onder de naam Villa Maria in 1962 met druiven die uit dit blok werden geoogst.
Gedurende de jaren zestig was Villa Maria een eenmansband, waarbij George's vrouw, Gail, hem steunde bij zijn onderneming.
George maakte droge rode en witte wijnen, waarbij hij druiven kocht uit de grotere regio's van Auckland.
Begin jaren 70 begon George personeel in dienst te nemen en het bedrijf breidde zich snel uit.
Tegenwoordig heeft Villa Maria meer dan 250 vaste medewerkers in dienst, teelt ze 28 verschillende druivensoorten en exporteert ze wijn naar meer dan 60 landen over de hele wereld.
