The collection of the State Hermitage includes more than three million works of art and artefacts of the world culture. Among them are paintings, graphic works, sculptures and works of applied art, archaeological finds and numismatic material.

Being found at the very beginning of the 18th century by the Russian imperator Peter the Great not far away from the northern capital – Saint-Petersburg, Peterhof was meant to become one of the greatest summer residences. All the building process has been done as quick as possible. On the august of 1723 the ceremony of the official opening of Peterhof took place, by that time the Lower Park was already planned and the Sea channel, most of the fountains were functioning and such palaces like “Monplaisir” and “Marli” has already been built. The idea of Peter the Great from one side was to make Peterhof the best summer residence of the Europe and on the other hand to become the triumphal representation of the winning in the Southern war. All these ideas came into reality and by the 1720s the Upper Garden and Lower Park were made, the largest system of the fountains and water channels was done, most of the sculptures were standing around the park. In the 1799-1806 the plumbeous sculptures were changed into bronze statues covered by gold. Such sculptures like Martos, Prokofyev, Rashette, Shubin, Shedrin were working in the Peterhof. In the planning system of the Peterhof the regularity and symmetry of the common structure collocates with the usage of the natural landscapes and the various picturesque views of the parks, pavilions and fountains.

St Isaac's Cathedral

Historical Landmark
20 minutes away
Saint Isaac's Cathedral is the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral in the city and was the tallest Eastern Orthodox church upon its completion. The church on St Isaac's Square was ordered by Tsar Alexander I, to replace an earlier Rinaldiesque structure. A specially appointed commission examined several designs, including that of the French-born architect Auguste de Montferrand (1786–1858), who had studied in the atelier of Napoleon's designer, Charles Percier. Monferrand's design was criticised by some members of the commission for the dry and allegedly boring rhythm of its four identical pedimented octastyle porticos. It was also suggested that despite gigantic dimensions, the edifice would look squat and not very impressive. The emperor, who favoured the ponderous Empire style of architecture, had to step in and solve the dispute in Monferrand's favour.

Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

Historical Landmark
20 minutes away
The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is one of the main sights of St. Petersburg. This Church was built on the site where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated and was dedicated in his memory. It should not to be confused with the Church on Blood in Honour of All Saints Resplendent in the Russian Land, located in the city of Yekaterinburg where the former Emperor Nicholas II (1868-1918) and several members of his family and household were executed following the Bolshevik Revolution.

Peter & Paul Fortress

Historical Landmark
30 minutes away
The Peter and Paul Fortress is the original citadel of St. Petersburg, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and built to Domenico Trezzini. The fortress was established by Peter the Great on May 16 1703 on small Hare Island by the north bank of the Neva River, the last upstream island of the Neva delta. Built at the height of the Northern War in order to protect the projected capital from a feared Swedish counterattack, the fort never fulfilled its martial purpose. The citadel was completed with six bastions in earth and timber within a year, and it was rebuilt in stone from 1706-1740. From around 1720, the fort served as a base for the city garrison and also as a prison for high ranking or political prisoners. The Trubetskoy bastion, rebuilt in the 1870s, became the main prison block. The first person to escape from the fortress prison (now an important destination for tourists) was the anarchist Prince Peter Kropotkin in 1876. Other people incarcerated in the "Russian Bastille" include Shneur Zalman of Liadi, Tsarevich Alexis, Artemy Volynsky, Tadeusz Kościuszko, Alexander Radishchev, the Decembrists, Grigory Danilevsky, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Mikhail Bakunin, Nikolai Chernyshevsky and Josip Broz Tito.
