Local Attractions

Salem's Riverfront Carousel

1 block away
Salem's Riverfront Carousel project was inspired by a trip Hazel Patton took in 1996 to visit family in Missoula, Montana. While there she went to see the first old-world style carousel built in the U.S. since the Great Depression. When Hazel rode the carousel, she knew it was more than the music and motion of the ornately carved and hand-painted horses that created magic in Missoula. The real beauty was how the carousel united the community by combining history with the creative talents of Missoula's citizens. She knew that the citizens of Salem could bring similar magic to the banks of the Willamette River.

Historic Elsinore Theatre

3 blocks away
On May 28, 1926, on a former livery stable site, the magnificent Elsinore Theatre first opened its doors to the public. Developed by George Guthrie, an entrepreneur and lover of art, the theatre was designed to resemble the castle in “Hamlet,” Shakespeare’s greatest drama.

Willamette Heritage Center

2 mi. away
A visit to the Willamette Heritage Center is a stroll through the history of the Willamette Valley. The five-acre campus is home to fourteen historic structures that present the stories and richness of Oregon's past. Pioneer buildings at the Willamette Heritage Center take visitors back to the early settlement of western Oregon. The 1841 Jason Lee House, arguably the oldest standing wooden frame house in Oregon, pre-dates the first wagon trains crossing the Oregon Trail. These structures provide a glimpse into the lives of the missionaries and pioneering families when these early founders were putting down roots in the Valley.

Additional Information

LEED Certified and EarthWISE Certified, the Salem Convention Center continues it’s efforts to be sustainable by adding a solar power generation system. Meeting planners holding events at SCC can feel good that a portion of the electricity used to conduct their meetings will be directly generated by the sun! In May 2012, SCC received recognition for sustainable practices by ranking #7 at the Oregon Business Magazine’s 4th Annual Celebration of the “100 Best Green Companies to Work for in Oregon”. The newest addition to SCC is the opening of the “Sculpture Now” show in the conference center plaza. This exhibit features beautiful sculptures created by artists throughout the Northwest. In addition to the sculpture garden, seven rarely displayed paintings from the Hallie Ford Museum of Art’s permanent collection are on display in the conference center. The Oregon Artist Series is presented annually at the Salem Convention Center and features the work of contemporary Oregon artists.
