Modlin Fortress

Historical landmark
25 km away
Modlin Fortress is situated in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki at the confluence of major rivers the Vistula and the Narew, 30 km north-west of Warsaw. Its origins date back to 1806, when Napoleon gave the order to strengthen the bridgeheads on the Vistula. According to legend, the French leader designed one of the first buildings himself. The defenses also includes fortifications built by Polish and Russian troops. The fortress, in the centuries of its existence, was used by the French, Russians, Germans and Poles. It comprises military barracks having a length of 2,250 metres, which makes it the longest building in Europe and the second longest in the world. The barracks were built in the first stage of erection of the fortress to serve 17,000 soldiers as the last point of resistance. The so-called White Tower, from which there is a fantastic view of the Narew, the Vistula and the former granary located across the Narew, reaches high above the building of barracks. In the 1980s, two rings of forts were built around Modlin: one inner ring about 2-6 miles away from the fortress and the outer one located 5-10 miles from Modlin. The inner ring consisted of 8 forts, the outer – 14. Some parts of the fortress are available to visitors, including the defensive barracks of the citadel, part of the fortifications and facility buildings, Ostrołęcka Gate and Fort X in Henrysin. Sightseeing Modlin Fortress may be done in the footsteps of Baśka Murmańska, a white bear adopted and tamed by Polish soldiers in Russia which during the First World War walked with the army as far as to Modlin. Her story was a basis for an amusing urban game for children that can be played within the walls of the fortress. To take part in it, you can simply download the playing cards, maps and guides to the fortress from the website https://www.baskamurmanska.pl/. In summer, reconstructions of battles, including of the Second World War, are organized in the fortifications.

Warsaw’s Old Town

Historical landmark
43 km away
Warsaw’s Old Town is the jewel in the Polish capital’s crown. It delights visitors with its colourful tenement houses and the unique atmosphere of its narrow streets. It is no wonder that it has been entered on the UNESCO World Heritage list! Be sure to visit the Royal Castle. It was there that the Constitution of 3 May was passed – the first in Europe and the second in the world. In the former home of Polish rulers, you will see the royal apartments, paintings by Rembrandt and canvases by Bernardo Bellotto, also known as Canaletto. On Castle Square stands the column of King Sigismund III Vasa, who in the 16th century moved the capital of Poland from Krakow to Warsaw. The oldest and the highest secular monument of the capital is an excellent landmark where locals in Warsaw often arrange to meet. The Old Town Square is the oldest and one of the most charming squares in Warsaw. It’s impossible not to fall in love with this place! It was laid out at the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Festivities and markets were organised here, but convicts were also executed. Although it is more than seven centuries old, its form has hardly changed. In the middle of the square stands a statue of the Warsaw Mermaid, the emblem and guardian of the city. If you are interested in the history of the city, visit the Museum of Warsaw or follow the Old Town Cellars Route. See also the barbican and the bell on Kanonia street, take a stroll along the old city walls and take a photo of the Vistula from the observation point at Gnojna Góra. Step into the cathedral, which houses the tombs of the medieval Mazovian princes, the last king of Poland Stanisław August Poniatowski, and the outstanding pianist and politician Ignacy Jan Paderewski. In the summer, the Old Town is full of café gardens and becomes a stage for cultural festivals. In winter, the Old Town and the Royal Route sparkle with beautiful illuminations.

Zalew Zegrzyński

Recreation
5 minutes away
The Zegrze Reservoir (or Zegrze Lake, in Polish officially Jezioro Zegrzyńskie, unofficially Zalew Zegrzyński) is a man-made reservoir in Poland, located just north of Warsaw, on the lower course of the Narew river. It is formed by a dam constructed in 1963 with a hydroelectric complex producing 20 Megawatts of power. Its total area is about 33 km². The name originates from the nearby Zegrze village, featuring the historic Radziwiłł Palace (Pałac Zegrzyński) built in 1847 by the noble Krasiński family

Lotnisko Warszawa Modlin

Airport
25 km away
Warsaw Modlin Airport is the first airport in Poland created particularly for low-cost airlines and charters. From June 2012 is has been the regional public airport, complementary to Warsaw Chopin Airport. The airport handles international short-distance and medium-distance flights. Air operations are carried out 24/7. On 15 July 2012 the biggest low-cost carrier - Ryanair - started its operations at Warsaw Modlin Airport. It operates regular international passenger flights to over 30 European cities: Barcelona, Glasgow, Brussels, Paris, Eindhoven, Milan, Liverpool, Stockholm, Oslo, London, Rome, Bologna, Bristol, Manchester, East Midlands, Dublin, Madrid and Gothenburg. The decision on opening connections by such a big carrier as Ryanair made Warsaw Modlin Airport the key transport hub in the country. Every carrier that has appropriate authorisation to carry out commercial flights may use the airport. The first passengers landed at Warsaw Modlin Airport on 15 July 2012 at 5:30 P.M. in an Airbus A 320. It was flight number W62467 operated by Wizzair from Budapest.
