Pittock Mansion
Pittock Mansion
Historiska landmärken
35 min
Pittock Mansion was the home of the owner of The Oregonian newspaper and with his wife Georgiana, they built the mansion overlooking Portland in 1914. The City of Portland owns the estate now and a collaboration of the Portland Parks & Recreation and the Pittock Mansion Society maintain the gorgeous home and property. Henry Pittock built an empire in the region with many of the booming new business ventures of the early 1900’s and Georgiana founded and supported many of the organizations still in place here today. The Pittock family moved in to the house in 1914 and by 1958, the last member had left and the home was placed on the market. In 1962, the home faced the Columbus Day storm and was severely damaged with interior and exterior exposed to the elements for over a year. The plan was that a subdivision was to be built on the beautiful property. Instead, in 1964 Portlanders rallied together to preserve the gorgeous piece of history and restore it back to its former glory. The City of Portland purchased the entire estate and repaired everything. Summer of 1965, the Mansion opened to the public and continues to be a must-see destination for the best view of Portland as well as a part of our History. The Mansion also has a vast lawn perfect for picnics and trails for exploring the estate.

Mill Ends Park
Park
25 min
Portland is home to the smallest park in the word, Mill Ends Park. Only two feet across, it was originally a hole where a light pole was intended to go in 1948 but one was never placed there. Instead, a reporter for the Oregon Journal named the hole after his column, Mill Ends. He could see the hole from his office on what is now called SW Naito Parkway and began writing about the adventures of the Leprechauns he could see there. He continued to write about the Leprechauns in the park until his death in 1969. But the park has been cared for by members of Portland’s community ever since and the park was declared an official city park in 1976. The park is constantly changing with the events that Portland holds, for example little green army men were placed in the park as a “flash mob” during Occupy Portland in 2011. Throughout the years, a pool complete with diving board for butterflies as well as a tiny Ferris wheel (brought in by a normal sized crane) and a piece of what used to be the building the Oregon Journal have all been brought to the park for Leprechaun and Portlander enjoyment.

The Portland International Rose Test Garden is one of 11 testing sites in the nation for multiple varieties of roses that are continuously evaluated determining which are the healthiest. There are currently 530 varieties in the Garden. By 1905 Portland was internationally known as the ‘City of Roses’ due to the 200 miles of rose-bordered streets that were an attraction for the visitors coming to the Lewis and Clark Centennial Celebration. Open to the public with free tours every day at 1 from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the Rose Garden has been a public piece of Portland’s history since 1917 when the land was acquired. Worried that roses would be destroyed during the First World War, the city approved the idea of a Rose Garden and began receiving roses from all over the world. The Rose Garden will be celebrating its Centennial anniversary in 2017.

OMSI’s vision is, collaborating with partners, will ignite an education transformation at the intersection of science, technology and design, and weave a thriving innovation district into the fabric of Portland, which spreads opportunities across the Northwest. By the mid-1980's, OMSI's popularity surpassed the size of its facility six times over and a new group of community leaders began a $32M campaign to build a state-of-the-art science center, culminating with a milestone donation from longtime supporter, Portland General Electric, of an 18.5-acre site that held a historic sawdust-fired power generation plant. On October 24, 1992, the new 219,000 square-foot facilities opened, adding the USS Blueback, the last non-nuclear powered submarine built by the U.S. Navy, just two years later. Today, the museum serves over 1 million visitors at the museum and through off-site education programs. OMSI is ranked as one of the top science centers in the United States and has an international reputation for its innovative exhibits and educational programs.
