About us

Completed on April 27th, 1867, the Amstel Hotel stands as a timeless testament to opulence and foresight. A marvel of its era, its construction spanned precisely one year and one day. Nestled within Amsterdam's historic landscape, it holds the prestigious title of being the city's sole 5-star accommodation housed within a building purposefully crafted for hospitality. Strategically situated to cater to the affluent elite of its time, the hotel's location was meticulously selected. Proximity to the city was balanced with the invigorating embrace of sea breezes, ensuring an environment of luxury and comfort. In an age before modern amenities, guests descended to the basement for bathing, as the concept of running water had yet to grace the era. Since its inception in 1870, the health club has been a bastion of wellness, a legacy curated by the pioneering spirit of Dr. Mezger. Specializing in medicine, physical therapy, and massages, his lineage proudly preserves his contributions to the Amstel Hotel, commemorated by a plaque within the health club. The lobby exudes timeless elegance, adorned with a chandelier hailing from 1892, marking the dawn of electricity in Amsterdam and the hotel. The Garden Room, affectionately known as the Tuinzaal, pays homage to its verdant past when the banks of the Amstel hosted lush gardens, predating the expansion of the restaurant and pool. Grand corridors bear witness to a bygone era, their ample breadth accommodating the graceful passage of ladies adorned in voluminous dresses. The transformation of the fourth floor from humble attic dwellings for staff to luxurious guest accommodations reflects the hotel's commitment to evolving with the times. In a nod to its rich heritage, the lobby was meticulously restored to its original palette of white, beige, and gold around 2020/2021, preserving its timeless allure. Noteworthy events in Dutch history, such as the 2002 nuptials of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, find their place within the hotel's storied halls, with the latter soon to be immortalized in a television series akin to the acclaimed "The Crown." The site of the hotel's offices once housed stables, a reminder of its evolution over the centuries. Echoes of regal influence linger, as evidenced by the lobby's trio of clocks, once adjusted by the esteemed Princess Wilhelmina to ensure her esteemed guests were always punctual. The legacy lives on.
