July 16, 2020

Dear readers:

Mid-July has brought a mix of news on the economy and how Americans are dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. At the Tech Council, we’re striving to bring perspective to current events through the lens of what’s happening in the state, the Upper Midwest and beyond.

In that vein, we’re pleased to announce two upcoming events:

Our “Crossing the Coronavirus Chasm” series continues 1 p.m. July 28 with a panel discussion featuring experts from three of Wisconsin’s most familiar health-tech companies -- Epic, Exact Sciences and Promega -- who will discuss their collaborative efforts to fight the pandemic in Wisconsin and elsewhere. This is a rare chance to learn how these large companies worked together in urgent times, what they learned and what comes next. Please register here.

Also on tap is the Aug. 11 start of a webinar series on how Midwest assets can help to drive a national recovery. Learn more below about “Shaping the Endless Frontier: How the Midwest Can Spark the U.S. Economy.”

“Shaping the Endless Frontier: How the Midwest Can Spark the U.S. Economy” begins 11 a.m. Aug. 11. It is hosted by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, the Wisconsin Technology Council, Michael Best Strategies and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Part One: Why Midwest Assets Are Vital for Growth 11 a.m. webinar on Tuesday, August 11

Join us for a 60-minute discussion with regional thought leaders on why Midwest states are uniquely equipped to spark the nation’s economy and drive meaningful innovation. The session will explore recent research on how place-based investments in emerging growth centers across the country can remedy regional gaps in capital investment, maintain U.S. leadership in innovation, and attract the tech stars of the future to the nation’s heartland.

  • John Austin, Senior Fellow Metropolitan Policy Program, Brookings Institution
  • Ruben Anthony, CEO and President, Urban League of Greater Madison
  • Erik Iverson, CEO, Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF)
  • Tom Still (moderator), President, Wisconsin Technology Council

Finally, please read my latest “Inside Wisconsin” column.

InsideWis: Collapse of foreign student rule may bring more market sense to immigration

Some people would be tempted to blame pointy-headed campus intellectuals for the abrupt demise of the Trump administration’s attempt to block most foreign students from entering the country.

Not unless you think of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University and dozens of major businesses from coast to coast as bastions of liberalism. Click here to the full column.
