Depicting
Treatment & Recovery
 A Message from EIC's President, CEO & Co-Founder, Brian Dyak
Substance abuse has extensive effects on social relationships, environmental stability, and the subsequent distress of one’s well-being. While a great deal of attention is aimed toward abuse, addiction, and treatment, the same cannot be said for the recovery process. That is why I'm proud to have had EIC co-host this year's National Recovery Month Luncheon with the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA) to recognize the importance of recovery and all those that make recovery possible.
Treatment and recovery is more than the stereotypical 30-day detox program. The goal of successful treatment and recovery is to transform the individual’s lifestyle in order to prevent relapse of prior addictive habits. In every instance of substance abuse there are underlying factors that drive this particular behavior. Unfortunately, the chronic nature of addiction is often overlooked, as are major facets of the recovery process.
When designing characters consider ways that you can bring the story of recovery to life. Treatment is just the beginning and there is plenty to explore, through your creative work, as your character enters into this new chapter of their life.

It is important to remember as you develop characters depicting treatment and recovery that abstinence is only part of a full recovery.
“Addiction treatment must help the individual stop using drugs, maintain a drug-free lifestyle, and achieve productive functioning in the family, at work, and in society. Because addiction is a disease, most people cannot simply stop using drugs for a few days and be cured. Patients typically require long-term or repeated episodes of care to achieve the ultimate goal of sustained abstinence and recovery of their lives."

Profile On: Nurse Jackie
|
In the PRISM Award winning fourth season of Showtime’s Nurse Jackie we find Jackie (Edie Falco) taking on a new chapter in her life, sobriety. The season begins with Jackie heading off to rehab and following an intensive stay returning to her job and life to deal with the consequences that she had left behind. Jackie must face divorce, the firing of close co-workers for enabling her addiction and the death of a friend. Throughout the season she is tempted to relapse during many stressful occasions but she finds the strength to overcome it and heads into season five sober.
This story of recovery is not only raw but it is also authentic. By showcasing the importance of seeking help and treatment and the trials that accompany real recovery, Jackie’s experiences expose the aftermath of the dramatic intervention and detox that many shows may end a story at. Jackie truly shows that recovery and the battle to stay sober wages on each day and every day sober is a success.
Think about ways that you can explore recovery in your characters, consider the importance of telling the story that happens after someone gets sober.

Suggestions for Depicting Addiction

Where appropriate, try to demonstrate the difference between treatment and recovery, depict someone coming out of treatment, remaining sober/drug-free for some time, and then facing the challenges of a substance-free lifestyle. Do they get support from their family? Do they have the financial means/health insurance to cover another treatment stay?
- Think about how being in recovery can affect everyday situations. For example, a couple going out to eat might ask to be seated away from the bar “because it’s too noisy.” We know the woman is in recovery; she doesn’t want to see or smell the alcohol.
- Consider portraying a high school or college star athlete with a history of addictive behavior. What happens when he is injured on the court or in the field, and needs prescription painkillers?
