Staff Giving Update

Dear ExampleContactFirstName,

As we all know, 2020 has been a year unlike any other.

Looking back, we were so fortunate in our timing, to be able to welcome our 2020 scholarship recipients in person, with no COVID-19 restrictions in early March. Of course, things changed soon after that, but what hasn’t changed, is the support of generous staff donors like you.

Thanks to your generosity and that of your Staff Giving payroll colleagues, 57 scholarships will be available in 2021. Because of you, we will be ready to help as many disadvantaged students as possible continue their studies next year.

Students like Grace and D’Arcy below are grateful for your support. Please read their inspiring stories.

I would like to thank and welcome our newest members into our Staff Giving family, including Clare Burns, who won the 3MT competition this year. You can find out more about Clare below.

I have one Christmas wish to ask of you. Please can you SHARE this newsletter by onforwarding to your colleagues. The impacts of R2S will sadly mean we will lose some Staff Givers. With your help, you can help grow awareness of this important program, with the hope and joy that more staff will join us.

All the very best for the festive season and on behalf of Staff Giving and the disadvantaged students you have helped, we are so grateful to have your ongoing support.

As always, please get in touch if you have any questions or suggestions on staffgiving@griffith.edu.au

Grace Sholl

Grace and her 'never quit' attitude

Grace Sholl, a Students' Future Fund scholarship recipient this year, has faced a lot in her 19 years of life, yet her 'never quit' attitude has seen her resilience pay off.

Grace says "receiving that scholarship acceptance email was a turning point for me! It wasn't just the monetary support - it was the recognition that I was deserving of extra support so I could achieve my dreams of becoming a psychologist."

Grace has seen opportunities open up to her, that would not have been possible without the support of her scholarship, such as being selected to take part in the United Nations Millennium Fellowship. She says, "it's been such an amazing experience, learning from and networking with people all over the world."

"To those who donated towards my scholarship, I’d simply like to thank you for your altruism and empathy. What may feel like a small act of charity to you has completely changed my life, and the lives of so many others like me."

D'Arcy

D'Arcy is a proud scholarship recipient

D'Arcy Smith, named after 'the Mr Darcy' has nothing but pride for her achievements since receiving her Students' Future Fund scholarship this year. It could have been so very different though. In January, her hours were significantly cut in the tourism office she was working in, began to feel the effects of COVID-19 early on.

"I was concerned about how I would be able to support myself whilst continuing my studies and was considering putting my degree on hold for the year to seek full-time employment," she says.

Thankfully she successfully applied for a Students' Future Fund scholarship, enabling her to continue studying full-time.

"I'd like to say thank you to the donors for investing in students like myself and showing us that our hard work, our passion and potential is recognised. This scholarship has alleviated a lot of the financial burden and pressure that comes with being a student."

Clare Burns

Meet Clare Burns, a new Staff Giver

Welcome and thank you to those of you who have recently joined Staff Giving - we appreciate your support!

One of our newest Staff Givers is Clare Burns. Clare is a PhD candidate and sessional academic in the Department of Business Strategy and Innovation. You may be aware that Clare was announced as this year's winner of Griffith University’s 3MT, (Three Minute Thesis competition). In addition to her professional career, Clare is an active volunteer of Rosies Friends on the Street. Here's what she has to say about Staff Giving:

For a number of years, I had been interested in the Staff Giving Program but had a psychological barrier to participating as a sessional academic and full-time PhD student. This was wrong.

Once I found out I could give as a sessional it was then, how much? I need to be prudent, but I can give a little.

If you are a staff member hesitant about making Staff Giving as part of your new normal, I would encourage you to give as you can, not as you can’t, even $5, $10, or $20 will make a difference.

Who wants to be a buddy in 2021?

One aspect of the Staff Giving Program is the Buddy Program. This is a voluntary program which pairs a Staff Giver with a scholarship recipient to provide support and advice throughout the year.

This can be coffee catch ups or just a friendly face to chat with at various planned activities and events.

Please note that this is not an academic mentorship and no knowledge of the students study area is required. However, if you would prefer a student from a particular discipline, then that’s something we can look to match up.

You can find out more about the Buddy Program here.

Please let us know by registering your interest by Monday 1 February 2021.
