On behalf of AdvancED, we wish to congratulate Phil Metcalf and Joe Houston Walker for receiving the AdvancED International Excellence in Education Awards.  The award recognizes Phil and Joe for their unparalleled leadership in promoting and advancing excellence in education.

The Excellence in Education Award was introduced in 2009 to recognize individuals for their achievements in education. Nominees were judged on their contributions of:
  • Generating a common vision and mission for higher expectations among students, faculty, and the education community.
  • Demonstrating a record of significant and distinguished contribution to the education profession.
  • Providing a lasting positive impact on student learning.
  • Serving as a role model and mentor for students and/or future generations of educators.
  • Demonstrating significant professional contribution to NCA CASI and SACS CASI.
The AdvancED Office of International Services is honored to be able to bestow this award on Phil Metcalf and Joe Houston Walker. Congratulations again.

Sincerely,

New Accreditation Components Launched
AdvancED recently launched the new AdvancED Accreditation Protocol and new components for the AdvancED Adaptive System of School Improvement Support Tools (ASSIST).  These tools and protocols, coupled with the AdvancED Accreditation Standards launched last fall, mark a new generation of accreditation and school improvement.  The new AdvancED Protocol creates a stronger alignment between internal and external diagnostic review, stakeholder feedback, and student performance results.  The result is a performance-based accreditation process that provides each institution with a comprehensive analysis to drive continuous improvement.

Additional components of ASSIST also have been released.  In addition to the school improvement planner launched last fall, ASSIST now provides the tools to guide your next internal and external review for accreditation, including Surveys, Student Performance Diagnostic and Stakeholder Feedback Diagnostic tools.

If you will be hosting an External Review (formerly Quality Assurance Review) in 2012-13, you are required to use ASSIST to submit a Self-Assessment, Executive Summary, and Assurances.  As in the past, you will continue to be required to submit a school improvement plan.  ASSIST offers a high quality school improvement planner, or you may submit an existing plan by attaching it in the Assurances section of ASSIST.

Even if you don’t have an External Review scheduled in the coming year, you can begin exploring and using the new offerings.  If you have questions about the AdvancED Accreditation Standards, Accreditation Protocol, or ASSIST, please contact our office.

Northwest Transition to AdvancED Begins
The Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC) Board of Trustees voted at its Annual Meeting in December to approve new bylaws for NWAC to officially become an accreditation division of AdvancED.  The transition will begin immediately.

NWAC will continue to accredit under the NWAC name so that their brand recognition is maintained.  The Northwest Accreditation Commission, established in 1917, is one of the six regional accrediting bodies in the United States and serves schools, systems, and education providers in seven states including Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington, and 10 countries, including Egypt, India, Kosovo, Macedonia, Panama, Poland, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Spain and the United Arab Emirates.  By joining together, AdvancED and the NWAC expand their capacity and resources to deliver accreditation and school improvement services throughout the network and provide added support to schools committed to continuous improvement.  AdvancED recently opened the AdvancED Northwest Regional Office in Las Vegas, Nevada to support the transition and NWAC State Offices as well as the education providers they serve.

The Northwest Accreditation Commission joins the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI) as an accreditation division of AdvancED.  With the addition of NWAC, AdvancED now serves nearly 30,000 public and private schools and districts in over 70 countries.  Please feel free to contact our office if you have questions about the transition.
Are You Proud of Your Accreditation?
Of course you are and we want to help you display your pride in your school’s or system’s achievement by providing you with an accreditation seal that you can display.  Schools and systems that have achieved accreditation through the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI) can obtain the latest accreditation seal to display at their school or school system.  These seals supersede the use of prior AdvancED, NCA CASI, or SAC CASI logos or seals that may have been used in the past and should be used in all marketing materials moving forward.

AdvancED developed a Communications Kit tailored especially for schools and school systems to promote their accreditation in their community.  In this kit, you can find the seal along with other resources and tools to help you spread the word about your commitment and dedication to student achievement.  If you are unsure how to access the Communications Kit for the accreditation seals, press release templates, and accreditation brochures, contact our office.  Don’t delay; start using these tools today.
