Greetings from the Parents Program at Seaver College
April 2014

Can you believe it? Only four weeks left of the Spring term! These last few weeks can be extremely challenging for Pepperdine students. Please keep them in your prayers for not only their academic success but also for their physical endurance. The library is open 24 hours a day during finals week and there are plenty of students that take advantage of the extended hours. We are hopeful they will finish well that which is set before them.

"And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith." -Hebrews 12:1-2

5 for 5 – Senior Campaign Launches this Week!

Research clearly indicates that philanthropic people have one thing in common – they were raised in families where philanthropy was valued and practiced. Even though a college education can be seen by outsiders as expensive, insiders often report it was worth every dollar invested.

FIVE_FOR_FIVE250

A Pepperdine degree will pay untold dividends over the course of a lifetime. And your student’s degree takes on even more value when we can show that many people give “mini” gifts since rankings measure participation over dollars given. Will you join so many of us in encouraging students to give back in a tiny act of sacrificial generosity?

Graduating Senior students will be approached by the Student Philanthropy Council and encouraged to give $5.00 every year for the next 5 years as their Senior Pledge! Help your student live the life of generosity embodied in our motto: “Freely we have received, freely we give.”

The Mountain Presents: All Sons & Daughters Concert!

The Mountain is a student-ministry group at Pepperdine as well as the name of the concert and free event to be produced April 6, 2014.  The Mountain is the manifestation of a vision of several Pepperdine students, who desire the community to be more united and to experience as a whole renewal in the Gospel.

All Sons & Daughters' is a group that connects broken people with their God. Worship leaders at Journey Church in Franklin, TN, their critically acclaimed EPs, Brokenness Aside, Reason To Sing and The Longing, along with their first full length feature album, Season One, bear witness to the power of worship by the people, for the people and of the people.

71st Annual Bible Lectures

biblelectures250

It's an amazing transformation--One day the Malibu Pepperdine campus is full of students who are taking their last exam and packing; a few days later, thousands of guests come pouring in for the annual Bible lectures. Surrounded by stunning views of the Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, believers from all over the world have a chance to grow spiritually from scriptural teaching.

Our hope—and the reason the leaders of Pepperdine have committed the energy and resources of the university for this event—is that you will leave with a sense of spiritual renewal, committed to bless believers back home and to join God in his kingdom work.

Renowned minister and author John Ortberg will lead a special pre-conference session on Tuesday, April 29, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Firestone Fieldhouse. His books include Who Is This Man? and The Me I Want to Be.

We hope you'll be able to join us April 29 - May 2, 2014 as we explore the theme "Enter the Water, Come to the Table." Together, we'll explore how baptism and communion guide us in our understanding of gospel, discipleship, community, mission, and God's future. Click here to register.

Up Against the Screen: New Music With Film

A Lodging for the Night (1912), scored by Matthew Aune
The School Teacher and the Waif (1912), scored by Andrew Gladbach
Near Yet So Far (1912), scored by Thomas Yee

Under the direction of Professor N. Lincoln Hanks, the films with their live scores will be screened at Pepperdine's outdoor Amphitheater. This is going to be a marvelous event, complete with 6 food trucks in the Smothers lot.  Free Admission!  Saturday, April 12 at 7:30 pm in the Amphitheater.

Is Your Child Studying Abroad This Year?

The school year is winding down, and now is the time to start preparing for your student to study abroad next year! As you and your student plan for their exciting year or semester at an International Program, check out each program's library website, which offers maps, information on classes, the country's daily news, and more!
Also, if your student is studying abroad for the full year, encourage your student to stay on track with their Visa applications!

Is Your Junior or Senior on the Housing Wait List?

We have a glimmer of good news to share with all of you about our wait list. Pepperdine has decided to turn W building in the Drescher Apartments from a Villa hotel operation into student housing for next year! We also forecast that 30-50 beds may become available in Towers depending on the incoming freshmen and transfer student classes.

The W building will be configured for triple rooms with the new campus triple furniture. Each room has a private bathroom, air conditioning, and flat screen TV to make these some of the nicest rooms on campus. While there are no kitchens in these units, a CoolWave Microwave/Refridgerator unit will be provided in each room. Even with three people per apartment, we consider these to be comparable price wise with Lovernich at the cost of $4640 per semester. The cost for a Towers double is at $5400 per semester.

We currently have over 300 students on the wait list. The highest priority of need are those without cars who can commit that they will not register a vehicle next year. This will also be evaluated with the need for students with high campus involvement that requires them to be on the Malibu campus most of the day and night such as:
·      A major with commitments such as Theater, Music, or Biology
·      A job or internship on campus
·      Extra-curricular activities such as clubs, sports, SGA, or ministry

We wish that we had housing for all of you on campus and we regret that even this solution won’t take care of everyone. In particular, if you have a car and your involvement in campus activities is less than 15 hours per week, we would encourage you to continue looking for housing off campus. Only 20% to 30% of the wait list will be able to get housing through this process.

An email and link to the process will be emailed to you by
April 4th. The web form will be open for you to register your needs with us between April 4th and April 18th.  We will notify students of placements beginning May 15th.

Sincerely,

HRL Staff

Pepperdine Families Needed to Host Summer Send-Off Parties

These can be held in your home, a restaurant, a park, or anywhere you think students would enjoy gathering. Please contact kimberly.barkis@pepperdine.edu if you are interested in hosting a Summer Send-Off Party in your area.
