Message from the Vice Chancellor

In Australia and elsewhere there is a decided shift by governments towards “place-based policy” which encourages universities to assume an even greater role in the economic transformation of our cities and regions. The public expect two-way engagement with their local universities that extends beyond education and into the arts, culture and heritage, health and well-being, citizen science, sustainable management of the environment and many other aspects of society.

The lure of discovery

A six-month sabbatical in Australia in the mid-80s and return visits in the following years, presented Professor Lenz with a wonderful dilemma, the luxury of choice. For the German-born biologist, Australia’s rich biodiversity offered him an abundance of species to study and excellent universities to conduct a PhD.

'The journey I was meant to take'

It wasn't so long ago that homelessness and associated economic stresses threatened Byron Johnson's capacity to continue studying a Bachelor of Social Work. The journey hasn't been easy but with the help of a Griffith Futures Scholarship, Byron is fulfilling his potential and applying his experiences and qualifications to helping others.

After four years of post-graduate study, Chanel Dunn’s graduation day was the first time she met her peers and teachers in person. No, she wasn’t an exceptionally gifted student that gained immediate credit and surpassed all expectations. She was one of a growing number of Griffith Digital Campus students who completed her degree online and from interstate.
