This Summer, EIC joined forces with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy as well as partner organizations
from within the entertainment industry to host a forum focusing on getting the entertainment industry involved in promoting science, engineering, and technology to young people.
The program included both a briefing on character and storyline development with a focus on science, engineering, and technology as well as a forum where panelists discussed how these fields integrate into the entertainment industry off-screen.
The Call to Action resulting from these events is clear, now is the time to get our young people interested in these fields and one of the best ways to do that is through their favorite characters and TV Shows.

Suggestions for Character and Storyline Development
The entertainment industry has the power to influence students to enter into careers related to science, engineering, and technology (S.E.T.) by accurately portraying these fields through characters who become young, exciting heroes that showcase the true “faces” of modern scientists, engineers, and technologists. - Try to steer clear of stereotypes, by casting traditionally un-expected characters as scientists or engineers kids will see that they too can excel at these careers and feel more encouraged to try them.
- Almost every professional field relies on a scientist, engineer, or technologist at some point. Consider ways that you can incorporate these characters as experts being called in to help with a specific issue or conflict; giving them the opportunity to save the day.
