June 2, 2020

Dear readers:

How important is Wisconsin’s ultimate economic rebound? The latest economic report from the state’s Department of Revenue makes that clear. In a report issued Tuesday, the state’s tax collection agency noted that Wisconsin lost 440,000 jobs in April while 20 million jobs were lost nationwide. As a comparison, Wisconsin lost 170,000 jobs in two years during the Great Recession, while the United States lost 8.5 million jobs. Wisconsin personal income grew 4.0% in 2019, compared to 4.4% nationwide. The forecast calls for growth of 0.2% in 2020 and 1.6% in 2021. Entrepreneurs will make a difference in the comeback. Read more here and join us Thursday for the Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Conference, where experts will talk about what’s next for companies like your own.

Happy birthday, Wisconsin: You’ve aged well

At a time when some iconic gatherings are being cancelled or delayed, including the Wisconsin State Fair for the first time in 75 years, it’s important to remember the state has weathered hard times in the past … Civil War deaths that topped 12,000, the Peshtigo fire, two World Wars, the Great Recession and more. From its statehood in 1848 until now, Wisconsin has both prospered and persevered. So, happy 172nd! Here’s hoping No. 173 is a little more normal.
