Supervisor training for human and health service professionals

Leadership in the 'helping professions' has always had unique demands that require specialized training. This is even more applicable now with the increase in demand for services, changes in service delivery and the new hybrid (virtual and non-virtual) work environment. 

Under the guidance of leadership subject matter experts, Susan Geary, PhD, and Marion Langford, M.Ed., the Certificate for new supervisors program provides professionals the opportunity to examine the multi-faceted role of the supervisor. Participants will strengthen their leadership proficiency and develop the practical skills needed to be effective leaders in health and human services.


Four virtual training days (modules) make up the Certificate for new supervisors program.

Each module, outlined below, addresses a different area of successful supervisory skills building:

June 29 - Essential skills for the new supervisor: explore the basics of supervision, such as how to set clear expectations, delegation, providing feedback and coaching

July 6 - Leadership and motivation: examine leadership tools that connect and motivate employees to the vision of the organization

July 13 - Holding difficult conversations: understand how to prepare for and conduct any difficult conversation

July 20 - Cultivating your credibility and influence: learn how to engage people in a way that gains trust and respect

CPA Sponsor Logo large SickKids CCMH Learning Institute has approval from the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) for participants of our programming to apply the number of CE hours earned in the program(s) towards their continuing education hours. The number of eligible CE hours are outlined within each program.
Other licensing boards and professional organizations will grant CE credits for attendance at their own discretion; participants will need to submit the course outline and certificate for their consideration.

The Ontario Psychiatric Association presents Indigenous Health Event: Personal reflections on disparities in Indigenous health and mental health

When: June 7, 2022, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. EST

Speaker: Dr. Anna Banerji

Dr. Banerji will describe her experience with RSV in Inuit babies, her experience with her son and other observations as examples of a larger problem: lack of understanding of the impact of colonization on the physical and mental health of Indigenous peoples.
