Welcome Back to School and Welcome to AdvancED Alaska!As we start this school year, there are a lot of great changes on the horizon for implementing school improvement and accreditation in our state moving forward. As you likely know, the Board of Trustees and Commission of the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC) approved bylaws that establish NWAC as an accreditation division of AdvancED, expanding our capacity and resources to deliver accreditation and continuous improvement services to you. With our shared mission to improve the quality of education around the world, together, we build greater support for schools and school systems that are committed to continuous improvement. For example, all schools in the AdvancED network, including NWAC schools, will have access to the Adaptive System of School Improvement Support Tools (ASSIST), a state-of-the-art, web-enabled platform for accreditation and continuous improvement. This new technology can help schools ensure no compliance detail or improvement activity is missed during the improvement process. School systems, state agencies, and partner organizations also will benefit from ASSIST by harnessing the ability to aggregate and review, for the first time, how the practical work of continuous improvement is conducted at the local level. ASSIST allows schools and systems to gain a better understanding of past successes and opportunities and confidently build and implement a solid, research-based plan for the future. I realize that this is all still new, but you must agree that the benefits and possibilities are exciting as well! We will continue to accredit under the NWAC name so that your school maintains the brand recognition in our region, while gaining access to a broader network of schools and greater resources. Some schools in NWAC will begin using the new AdvancED Standards and Protocol this year, with full implementation in 2013-14. As you learn more, I think you will agree that the new Standards, Protocol and ASSIST are the perfect trio of tools and resources to help guide you on your continuous improvement and accreditation journey. We are excited about the opportunity that joining AdvancED offers to benefit school systems, schools, and ultimately students through our shared commitment to education quality.
