WellmanRemembering Dr. Mark Wellman

As originally announced on December 28, it is with incredible sadness that we share the news that Dr. Mark Wellman, assistant dean of corporate relations and director of the Business, Society and the Economy program of College Park Scholars, suddenly and unexpectedly passed away over the weekend. In addition to his decades with BSE Scholars, he also directed the university’s three largest short term global immersion programs, taking students to the United Arab Emirates, Southeast Asia, and Australia.

In 2010, Dr. Wellman received the University of Maryland Brit Kirwan Undergraduate Education award in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the university. He also received numerous awards for teaching, including the Allen J. Krowe Teaching Excellence award and the Outstanding Faculty Educator award.

Each of the students he has taught will remember his enthusiasm, kindness and genuine interest in their well-being. Share your memories and photos of Dr. Wellman on the website.

January Alumni Spotlight GraphicKristie Curameng Bradford MBA ‘05: Thriving, Where Business and Technology Meet

What does a typical work day look like for Kristie Curameng Bradford, MBA ’05? Well, there’s really no such thing — and that’s precisely why she loves her job.

“No days look similar,” says Bradford, director of intellectual property at IBM. “There are so many things I could be doing in one day.

In her current role, she is responsible for monetizing innovations, from strategy development to transaction execution. Her focus is in quantum computing, artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and monetization via Venture Capital and Private Equity channels.

In her prior role as a business development executive, Bradford led healthcare-specific mergers, acquisitions and strategic partnership for IBM Watson, the well-known supercomputer best known for beating out contestants on “Jeopardy!” in 2011. Of course, Watson is much more than that – AI has come a long way in the past decade. Read Kristie's full story.
