Our summary of upcoming events, such as the March 19 Wisconsin Tech Summit, reflect the broad range of interest in the information technology, life sciences and advanced manufacturing sectors. Speakers who exemplify academic research and talent initiatives in the Milwaukee-Madison corridor and statewide will speak March 19 at the fifth annual Wisconsin Tech Summit in Waukesha. UW-Milwaukee Chancellor Mark Mone, who is leading the Regional Talent Partnership sparked by the Milwaukee 7 economic development group, and Erik Iverson, the managing director of the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, will bracket a day’s worth of “speed dating” meetings between major and emerging companies.

Is Wisconsin making progress when it comes to extending high-quality broadband coverage to all parts of the state? Find out Tuesday, Feb. 20 at the Tech Council Innovation Network luncheon meeting in Madison. A panel of experts will describe emerging technologies, state-backed broadband initiatives and the federal “Connect America Fund 2,” which is being used to help communities better connect. The luncheon will be held at the Sheraton Hotel on Madison’s John Nolen Drive.

Hear about progress and challenges in building a stronger infrastructure for broadband in northern Wisconsin at the Tuesday, Feb. 27 meeting of the Tech Council Innovation Network in Ashland. This Tech Council Innovation Network luncheon is in partnership with the Ashland Area Development Corp. and the Bayfield County Economic Development Corp., both of which are regional economic development groups. It will be held at the Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College’s Ashland campus, 2100 Beaser Ave., conference rooms 306-307.

The work of the UW-Madison Department of Computer Sciences and how computer science is driving the Wisconsin economy will be explored at the Thursday, March 8 meeting of the Tech Council Innovation Network in Wauwatosa. Guri Sohi, professor and chairman of the UW-Madison Department of Computer Sciences, will be joined by Jignesh Patel, a professor in the UW-Madison Department of Computer Sciences, in talking about how the department can help industry in Wisconsin and beyond. The event will take place UW-Milwaukee’s Innovation Accelerator.

‘Wisconsin YES!’ student business plan contest open for middle, high school entries through April 2
Wisconsin Youth Entrepreneurs in Science, a statewide youth business plan contest modeled after the successful Governor’s Business Plan Contest, is open for online entries from Wisconsin middle- and high-school students through 5 p.m. April 2, 2018. Public, private and home-schooled students across Wisconsin are eligible to turn their science- and tech-related ideas into business plans and compete for cash and prizes. The contest begins with a 250-word summary submitted through www.WisconsinYES.com. Entries that advance to Phase 2 of the competition will expand their idea into a 1,000-word executive summary. Throughout the process, students get feedback from professionals across Wisconsin who will serve as judges.

The Wisconsin Technology Council is participating in the 2018 CompTIA D.C. Fly-In, which is organized by the Technology Councils of North America and the Computing Technology Industry Association. Tom Still, president of the Tech Council, will attend this two-day event in Washington, D.C., to represent Wisconsin’s technology-related companies and our members who share a goal of growing the technology sectors in Wisconsin. The fly-in takes place Feb. 13-14, 2018, and will include visits to congressional offices. For more information, click here.

Members of the Tech Council’s Innovation and Investors networks may attend a Feb. 19 “Head Start on HIMSS” reception led by the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce at Industrious, downtown Madison’s newest major co-working space. The reception is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and free to Tech Council members who register using the code found here.
