Understanding Indiana’s Not-So-New Immigration Law

On July 1, 2011, most of Indiana’s extremely controversial and much debated immigration law, Senate Enrolled Act 590, went into effect. The Indiana General Assembly followed a recent trend seen in other states, such as Arizona, that were frustrated at the failure of the federal government to pass immigration reform. When initially introduced, the proposed bill looked much like the Arizona “show me your papers, please” law, and in some ways was even more comprehensive. IALF Receives Contribution from State Young Farmers

Continuing a tradition, the Indiana Farm Bureau State Young Farmer Committee has designated the Indiana Agricultural Law Foundation as the recipient of the proceeds from the silent auction at this year’s Farm Bureau state convention. The amount raised from the silent auction totaled $6,465 dollars.  This brings the overall contribution from the State Young Farmer Committee to $50,658.

Chris Steele, IFB State Young Farmer Committee chair, explained why they have maintained their support.  “As young farmers, we have countless hurdles in the way of our operations being profitable. These days, a major legal battle is enough to end or severely offset years of hard work and planning. We support the Ag Law Foundation because it is able to help us fight off some of the major legal issues that many farmers are not able to fight on their own.”

The IALF is extremely grateful for the contribution from the committee and the support of all the individuals who donated items for the silent auction or purchased items. We also thank those other individuals and businesses who provided support to the IALF during 2012.

IALF Seeks to Protect Right-to-Farm Law

The IALF has pledged to support a family farm in a nuisance lawsuit filed against a dairy farm by agreeing to provide an amicus brief to the Indiana Court of Appeals. An amicus brief is filed by someone who is not a party to an action but who has a strong interest in the outcome of a case.  In this case, the IALF seeks to protect the right-to-farm law from an interpretation that it does not apply if the plaintiff is also a farmer who is claiming injury to the nonagricultural uses of the property.

Our content

Over the next year, we will explore the various aspects of labor and employment law, but we hope to expand the scope over time.
