is a continual Christmas.” Pithy, wasn’t he?

The 2015 Missouri Hospital Association (MHA) Annual Convention and Trade Show featured a guest speaker, Walter Isaacson, President of the Aspen Institute and former CEO of CNN and Managing Editor of Time. Isaacson impressed me so much that I borrowed from the library his biography of Benjamin Franklin. I learned that Ben was once the most popular man in the colonies, known not only for his media empire and scientific discoveries/inventions, but also known as an inveterate networker who got things done. Among his leadership achievements were the creation of North America’s first hospital, secular university, lending library, and local militia.
It is easy to refer to Dr. Franklin as Ben, because he promoted himself as a “leather-aproned printer” and seemed so down-to-earth. His modesty was legend. Nonetheless, Isaacson also describes Ben as the best writer in the colonies. Why? The man could construct a sentence. His language was colorful and had impact. The Tidbits quote about “conscience” has alliteration. Thoughts about Christmas evoke good feelings. And, it is inspirational. Ben’s proverbs and aphorisms offer timeless advice for a successful (as we each define our own) life. An ethical code of behavior is at the core. Following such a code makes a person feel as though “every day is Christmas”, a gift to ourselves. The ACHE Code of Ethics is a guideline that helps healthcare leaders sleep better when everything else in this turbulent field is stressful.
Ben was a proponent of mutual benefit societies. He started the “Junta”, a group of men that gathered to exchange information and help each other and the community. We can take a lesson. The mission of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) is ‘To advance our members and healthcare management excellence.” But, there is a networking piece and chapters play an important role.
The “About” tab of the ACHE website www.ache.org says, “ACHE's established network of 80 chapters provides access to networking, education and career development at the local level.” So, yes, chapters offer low cost educational programs locally, but the ACHE knows that healthcare is a small world. “Network or not work.”
Starting with the 2000-2001 ACHE Governance Task Force there began the decentralization of complex functions from Chicago to chapters. This shifted many responsibilities from a highly evolved professional association with skilled staff and more than 46,000 members nationally to MOHEG, a Missouri corporation with a volunteer board and more than 900 members. Missouri further decentralized to 5 Local Program Councils(LPCs) designed to meet the needs of Missouri members regionally. The MOHEG logo has 5 red stars on the Missouri map identifying the five: Central, Southeast, Southwest, St. Louis, and Kansas City. The KC LPC is bi-state, showing that the longest river in America can’t keep good people apart. In addition to providing Face-to-Face (formerly called Category I) credit for credentialing, LPC programs provide a way to stay in touch with colleagues in a neutral setting. In 2015 the Missouri chapter of the ACHE, MOHEG, offered 14 educational programs through all 5 Local Program Councils. Please support LPC events. Your LPC members work hard to serve you.
Thanks to all of the MOHEG members who overwhelmingly supported the Nominating Committee’s slate for the 2016 Board of Directors. The Committee worked diligently to provide statewide representation of healthcare leadership in Missouri (roster linked). MOHEG has a 14-member board. 12 members will be in positions that are new to them. The two whose jobs are the same are ex officio ACHE Regent, Janet Weckenborg, FACHE, and Treasurer, Tom Saggio. Both do a great job already. Everyone else faces a learning curve. There are many moving parts in an ACHE chapter with operational and reporting requirements. Therefore, Missouri members can expect some change as MOHEG continues to learn, grow and evolve.

Annual ACHE Breakfast Recap
|

Every year during the Missouri Hospital Association Annual Convention and Trade Show, the ACHE Regent hosts the ACHE Breakfast. Missouri’s Regent, Janet K. Weckenborg, FACHE did an outstanding job of arranging and moderating this year’s event. On Thursday, November 5, 2015 over 70 ACHE members gathered in the beautiful Parasol Room at Tan-Tar-A for the annual breakfast and recognition event.
Christine M. Candio, RN, FACHE, President of St. Luke's Hospital Chesterfield and Immediate Past Chairman of the ACHE Board of Governors, gave the attendees an update on ACHE's work at the national level to support and promote diversity in healthcare leadership, improved educational offerings in leadership and support for young careerists entering the field. Christine’s talk, “Leading Through an Evolving Health Care Landscape: ACHE Update” was well received. MOHEG members are blessed to have a nationally recognized healthcare leader in Missouri.
The 2015 MOHEG Student Essay Award (M-SEA) was presented to Rockhurst University MBA student Mathew A. Strope for his essay “Adapting to Technological Change in the Healthcare Setting.” Theresa Flanders, FACHE was awarded the Regent's Early Career Award for many years on the MOHEG Board of Directors as Program Committee Chair and Co-Treasurer. David J. Baltzer, RN, LFACHE and Roma Nemani were awarded the Regent's Choice Award for their work in rebuilding Missouri’s ACHE chapter through revision of the corporate bylaws and creation of a policy manual to orient incoming members of the 2016 MOHEG Board of Directors

Mathew Strope Earns 2015 M-SEA

Mathew A. Strope is the recipient of the 2015 MOHEG Student Essay Award (M-SEA) for his essay “Adapting to Technological Change in the Healthcare Setting”. The award was presented during the 2015 ACHE Breakfast on November 5 during the Missouri Hospital Association Annual Convention and Trade Show.
Matt is a native of Jefferson City. He is anticipating graduation in 2018 from the Rockhurst University Helzberg School of Management with an MBA and from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences with a Doctor of Osteopathy degree. Matt graduated Cum Laude from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 2014 with Bachelor’s Degree majoring in Nutritional Sciences and a minor in Business. Matt has performed a variety of volunteer services and has an active physical fitness regimen. He says, “I don’t like to sit still for very long.
The purpose of M-SEA is to encourage future healthcare leaders to share their thoughts about the health care delivery system in original essays that contribute to the literature of the field.
Matt has a bright future as a clinician and healthcare leader. Please join in congratulating Matt for earning this prestigious MOHEG award for a student in an ACHE Higher Education Network (HEN) program!

Mackenzie Shelton was named
"Outstanding Student of the Year"

 ST. LOUIS, MO (Dec. 1, 2015) – Harris-Stowe State University is proud to announce that Health Care Management student researcher, Mackenzie Shelton, was named “Outstanding Student of the Year” by Midwest Transportation Center (MTC), a consortium of six universities (Iowa State University, Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., Harris-Stowe State University, University of Missouri-Columbia and University of Missouri –St. Louis and Wichita State University in Wichita, Kan.).
Shelton is a member of the Anheuser-Busch School of Business research team composed of three students (Shelton, Jasmine Bonner and Aaron Parnell) and four faculty/staff members (Dr. Fara Zakery, Dr. Joyce Eisel, Dr. Charles Sykes and Dr. Robert Kamkwalala) who are engaged in a research entitled “Economic Sustainability of Inner City Streets: A Collaborative Transportation and Safety Model.”
“Receiving this recognition is both humbling and encouraging because there are so many student researchers doing some amazing work in this field,” Shelton said.“It’s really rewarding to know that the models we use today could improve the social and economic conditions of people living in St. Louis City and the metropolitan region as a whole.”
This project focuses on safety in an urban area, which then will apply to social and economic variables within the community. Quantitative and qualitative research are used and several variables are being studied. These include experimental research methods regarding sidewalks, pedestrian control, bike paths, street lighting, cameras and utilities, as well as historical and current social and economic variables, including accidents and crime statistics and real estate values.
In addition, this technology-driven model will assist in the construction of future financial models based on a need projection to dollars spent ratio per fiscal year. This model could be replicated in similar localities.
The MTC is one of 10 regional University Transportation Centers sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology (USDOT/OST-R). It is funded by the 2012 federal transportation bill, the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21).
