Lady Bird Lake

Recreation
6 mi. away
Lady Bird Lake is a river-like reservoir on the Colorado River in Austin, Texas, United States. The City of Austin created the reservoir in 1960 as a cooling pond for a new city power plant. The lake, which has a surface area of 416 acres, is now used primarily for recreation and flood control. Outflow location is the Colorado River! On any of the more than 300 days of sunshine in Austin each year, there’s no better place to go than Lady Bird Lake. Whether hiking or biking the trails, doing stand-up paddle board yoga, or taking a river cruise, you’ll find no shortage of outdoor fun to be had in the heart of beautiful downtown Austin. Lady Bird Lake, an artificial lake on the Colorado River, stretches more than five miles through the south side of Austin in Travis County (centered at 30°15' N, 97°43' W). Hours Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Congress Avenue Bridge

Nightlife
8 mi. away
The Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge crosses over Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas. Before construction of the Longhorn Dam was completed in 1960, the bridge crossed the Colorado River from which Lady Bird Lake is impounded. A 1980 renovation transformed the Congress Avenue Bridge into an ideal bat cave, soon attracting migrating Mexican free-tailed bats. Decades later, Austin's bat numbers have swelled and locals have adopted the beloved creatures as neighbors who happily handle the city's bug mitigation and provide an amazing nightly show. WHEN TO SEE THE BATS Starting in late March and continuing through early fall, North America's largest urban bat population calls Austin home. The bats begin to wake up and start their night flight around sunset. The first few bats begin to trickle out from under the bridge then. After the sun sets, the show really begins, and hundreds to thousands of bats pour out and cascade East over Lady Bird Lake. The best time to witness the bats is around sunset, but the nightly show can take place anywhere from 7:30 to 9:45 p.m. It can take as long as 45 minutes for all of the bats to exit the bridge for the night. Plan to arrive early in order to find parking and get your spot.

COTALAND | Circuit of the Americas

Recreation
9 mi. away
OPENING 202! PROVIDING ANOTHER THING FOR FAMILIES TO DO! COTALAND, is the amusement park's name. It'll be equipped with at least 25 rides when it opens, including five roller coasters. "We expect the kiddie park to open sometime this year and then the thrill rides and entire park to open in 2023," he said. One of those coasters will be the Circuit Breaker, which will provide a truly unique experience. "It’s a tilt coaster, it’s going to be the first of its kind in America. It does have a sister overseas. It’s just the most neat experience to be dangling facing downward waiting for it to drop," said Matt Hughey, Sr. Manager of COTA Karting and COTALAND. Hughey said they are buying rides from all over the world, including from countries like Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. "We’ve got Palindrome coming this year, it’s the first of its kind as well. It’s a shuttle coaster and you can only ride it here. It’s a shuttle coaster that takes you up 90 degrees and goes over COTA Boulevard," said Hughey. With Formula One, and a large amphitheater, visitors have only started seeing just the beginning of what COTA has to offer. Epstein said with already 1.2 million visitors each year, he hopes that number increases with the addition of the coasters.
