Lake Orta

Historical landmark
20 km away
Lake Orta lies to the west of Lake Maggiore, in the northern Italy. It is a minor star in the costellation of the subalpine lakes, but all the fascination and the history of the larger lakes seem to be concentrated in this short space. According to the legend, the Island of St. Giulio was dominated by a big serpent that destroyed everything. But when St. Giulio, that had the power to command over the waves, the storms, the wild animals and the human beings, arrived near the lake , waving his hand he chased away the dangerous menacing animal. He reached the Island journeying over the water on his cloack guided by his staff. The big reptile disappeared and St. Giulio, tired and near to his death, thought that the island was the right place to build his hundredth and last church dedicated to the Holy Apostles. The Island of San Giulio is today a place of great misticism. Here was born on 962 William of Volpiano, during the siege to Queen Willa by Emperor Otto, King Berengario II's wife, who had taken the Island from the Bishop of Novara. The big central building was a Castle. The island was the governor 's seat that represented the bishop. On 1842 it was destroyed to build on it a seminary. Now there is a Benedictin monastery that helps giving more mistic power to a place that is by nature immersed in the silence

Alessi - Italian Design Factory

THE MISSION I think that this will be the goal of design in the future (or at least, my goal for my future in the sphere of design): transforming the gadget function ascribed to objects by the consumer's society into a transitional opportunity, namely into an opportunity for consumers to improve their perception of the world. This kind of activity is typically paradoxical in the original meaning alongside the rule, the norm, the standard, as a means of grasping the so-called reality of the world and of life to its full extent. In the future most of our products will continue to be marked by a high degree of innovation and experimentation, as we believe this is the way to develop our ability to set trends, to promote our fame and to create a culture medium aimed at developing those projects we like to call Super & popular. Macugnaga Monte Rosa

Recreation
50 minutes away
In the second half of the 1200 Gotofredo, count of Biandrate and lord of Valsesia, married Aldisia, a rich girl of the valley, which brought as a dowry the Viège valley and the Anzasca valley. In this way the two valleys which were at the East of Mount Rosa happened to be under the same rule. As a consequence, the vigorous Saas's population, belonging to the Walser ethnic group, always so numerous as to be compelled to continuously search for new places where to live, took the opportunity to cross the Mount Moro pass and to come down in the Macugnaga plateau which offered a milder climate and richer grasslands. The Swiss immigration started the construction of the «old church» near the mountain huts of the biggest hamlet, the Dorf. Macugnaga, whose most ancient mountain pastures - Rovelli, Garda, Pedriola, Rosareccio, Caspisana and Quarazzola – were already mentioned in a document dated the 22nd of June 999, written by Arnulfo, archbishop of Milan, became very early an autonomous parish with the right to hold every year a very important fair. This fair was held around the lime-tree of the old church from the 16th to the 31st of August, and it was presided by the chief of Vogogna and by all his curia, with the attendance of a great number of mountain people coming even from the Aosta and the Swiss valleys. Macugnaga, the ancient colony of Z'Makanà Walser, Walser is among the countries that the village, perhaps still best preserves its ancient architectural structures and housing. They are in fact still present several barns (stadal), farms, bread ovens, mills and most splendid houses, which have a high degree of conservation among the best of all the settlements are still inhabited Walser. The Macugnaga zone is rich in trees and flowers. Going up toward Macugnaga you find mixed broad-leaved woods, with maple, ash, oak and chestnut trees. In the underwood in spring you find violets, windflowers, dandelions, red lilies and dog roses.

Borromean Island

Museum
5 minutes away
In 1632, Count Vitaliano Borromeo began the construction of the monumental Baroque palace and the majestic and scenic gardens, which have made the island famous and which to this day bear witness to the splendours of an era. The Borromeo family home offers visitors an elegant and sumptuous setting, and it contains priceless works of art such as tapestries, furniture, statues, paintings, and stuccoes. It also has an unusual mosaic grotto, a cool and delightful place. Once you have visited the palace, there is access to the garden for a pleasant walk. The gardens form an extraordinary, flowered monument laid out over a series of ornate and overlapping terraces, a classic and inimitable example of seventeenth century "Italian garden". The garden contains many rare and exotic plants, and the spectacular blossoming is planned to ensure that it is filled with colours and scents from March until October

Villa Pallavicino - Stresa

Historical landmark
10 minutes away
The Park of Villa Pallavicino in Stresa is a favourite tourist attraction on Lake Maggiore, a paradise of flowers and animals to delight visitors of all ages. The Park was originally the idea of the Neapolitan statesman Ruggero Bonghi, who fell in love with Lake Maggiore and decided in 1855 to purchase the land and build a small house for himself. In 1862 the family of the Marquises of Pallavicino acquired the property and began to improve it, extending the grounds, building drives suitable for carriages, embellishing the park with statues and transforming the modest house into the opulent 19th century Neoclassical mansion which still graces the hillside. In 1952 Marchioness Luisa Pallavicino completed the family project with the addition of a zoo with animals from every corner of the globe. Now thousands of tourists visit the Villa’s extensive 16 hectare-park between March and October. Broad lawns, shady avenues and open spaces planted with roses, oleanders, magnolias, daffodils, azaleas, and rhododendrons blend perfectly with the majestic, mature trees of the wooded areas. The zoo with its more than 40 species of animals from all over the world is the major visitor attraction: black swans, rare species of duck, grey crowned cranes, deer, silver pheasants, cervi-capra, zebras, Bennet kangaroos, and peacocks add their life and colour to this natural stage looking out over Lake Maggiore and the surrounding mountains.
